Default Expansion tank clean out

Still getting a Low Coolant message after installing a new sensor. I am guessing it is the float in the expansion tank.

I am thinking of using CLR to clean out the tank to get rid of anything in there. Would this cause any harm to the tank or float?

Thanks

I will monitor your progress. My low coolant light just came on yesterday. Put in some coolant but it wasn't very low. (maybe only a 1/4) gallon. Why not just use an approved "radiator flush" solvent from the parts house? I have used diluted white vinegar before to flush cooling systems... CLR seems an interesting choice. I certainly wouldn't put it in the entire "system." Probably OK if just rinsing out the tank itself... MC

I didn't think of a radiator flush solvent. It might be safer. Thanks! I am going to remove the tank to clean it out.
If you were a qt low then the tank was close to empty. The full level is at the bottom of the filler neck and if it is just a little below that, the light will come on.

Have a bottle of wine the night before you remove the Expansion Tank. Standard size cork is a perfect plug for the bottom water hose (circled in RED):

Graham, you are the man! I can see it now--"honey, I've got to finish this bottle tonight so I can clean my expansion tank in the morning". You must be a marriage couselor on the side.

Don't contaminate your coolant system with a cork from red or white wine. Be sure to use only the cork from an orange-colored wine....

Following the suggestion Jaguar owners only drink Champagne and purely in the interests of accurate information, after extensive testing I’ve concluded the standard 0.75 Litre bottle is the optimum size.

Don’t think I’ve got the right Twelve Steps here. I couldn’t get past the Third Step last night.

But I digress. Back to the Expansion Tank. Take the cork from your preferred bottle. Remove the wire cage and metal cap:

Cut the cork through at the top of the word ‘CHAMPAGNE’:

The top half can be discarded.

Rotate the remaining bottom half through 180 degrees so the taper faces vertically downwards:

Insert the cork into the coolant hose until there is no further leakage of coolant.

An heroic piece of work.
Selfless attention to duty, I call it.
Are you sure there aren't two or more hoses needing capping off?

Just curious, will the test results be valid for the earlier 4.0 engines? Possibly more testing is needed?

Just had a glass of the orange-coloured Jaguar wine. Don't know how you can drink that stuff.

The American bikers (not the Lance Armstrong version) will drink the green colored wine mixed with vodka. (Don't do it, it's toxic). I wonder how the orange Nehi wine would go with it? Also, wine cork is only permitted by French owners of Jags. But, they usually have those silly Renaults and Peugeots. BTW, go Audi (basically swept LeMans this year). MC

Default Done

Thanks for all the great replies. Found a "Martini" cork in house so I used it and I clamped off the hose with a small Visegrip pliers.

I discovered I had an expansion tank from a 98 MY with a plugged rear fitting. This is the subject of TSB 303-15.

I removed the expansion tank, blocked all the outlets and filled it with Prestone Super Radiator Cleaner. I let it set for about 45 minutes. Dumped it out and flushed the tank with water till it ran clear. Looked at the float with an inspection camera and it was very clean compared to before cleaning.

Since the rear bleed fitting was blocked on the expansion tank, I removed the bleed line and blocked the radiator outlet with a 3/8" vacuum cap. I double clamped it.

Jaguars, Veuve Clicquot, and spell checkers. Two out of three is acceptable.
