Fitting Modern Garmin2597LMT Satnav
very interesting project. Personally I would have liked to have kept the buttons for the 'original' look. But that is just me.
Anyway the reason for my posting is a suggestion. You say you put black tape down the edges to conceal the gaps? Could I suggest thin black rubber foam strips? The sort you get on a roll? That is adhesive on one side? My thinking is that it would conform to the contours of the dash by compressing slightly at the top and bottom. Not only would it give you a perfect seal but it would also cushion the unit. Just my 2p's worth as we say in the UK.
Good work and thanks for the video

Hello Lurker
Nice job. I'm working on installing a Garmin 2595LMT in my 2003 XK8. It's a work in progress but near completion. In case you're interested in the approach I took, here's a link to my posts...

Hi all
I've just almost finished a nav change on my 'new' 2006 XKR-S following the excellent guidance here and elsewhere (this is my fifth XK8/R) using a Garmin 2597LMT. I elected to take the usb lead out via the channel at the bottom of the nav area into the airbag space (RHD) and then down the side of the glove box and into an accessory box located by the passenger seat/central console/seat belt socket. This gives laptop access for updates as well. Everything works as it should.
My remaining problem is that I need to add a connection to the Garmin to activate the on/off function when necessary such as when it needs resetting etc. I assumed I could parallel wire across the existing switch and take this to a momentary push button located where the joystick control was as I still have all the controls present.
However, I just cannot fathom out how the Garmin momentary switch works since it apparently has four connections.. I've attached a photo of it - it's upside down here so the white plastic part depresses upwards in this view. There is battery voltage (3.6v) measured horizontally across the two pairs of contacts and nothing vertically. So what happens when you depress the switch? If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful. I haven't resorted to trial and error just in case.....
NB: the veneer panel is not fully pressed down as I know I have to remove it again.
Thanks
Tony

Yes, a couple of days ago. It's a DPST momentary switch and a SPST switch paralleled across (in the photo) just the left hand pair of contacts does the job.
I see several people on various forums are worried that having the Nuvi mounted like this will mean poor satellite signals but mine is fine. The attached is parked in my drive by the house and gets a virtually instantaneous lock after ignition on. I believe there is some form of internal caching when a lock is obtained that's used on each startup.
On another topic, has anyone successfully changed their main side windows please? At £800+ and +VAT EACH new I've found some used ones at a fraction of that cost. I calculate that mine have around 400 vertical scratches on each, apparently repeatedly wound up and own while crossing the Sahara!

Tony,
Glad to hear that you sorted it out.
Regarding the satellite reception question, my 2595LMT signal reception is excellent. With the car inside my garage, the signal strong and picks up satellites in a few seconds. Amazingly, even without a GTM60 Traffic Receiver/Charger, it picks up and displays traffic information from time to time. :-)

Hi guys I'm just back from a stint away and noticed this wonderful thread. I did the same in October but with the bigger Garmin unit, the 2799. My aging eyes forced that decision.
The unit is very flat and sits really nicely over the top of the old GPS hole. The Garmin is just wonderful. I spliced the power cable into the cigarette charger cable and the unit automatic switches on and off when the car is started or switched off. Brilliant.
The small unit above the Garmin is a French Coyote traffic advisory system. it is magnetically held in place just above the Garmin and comes off within seconds. This traffic advisory unit is unofficially used to spot speeding cameras and any mobile units, Oh and any possible traffic problems. It makes each user a spotter. Quite handy really.
I've added a photo to show what the bigger Garmin looks like just in case someone wants to try.
