Default Ford vs. Jag Water Pump

Hello – I am the proud owner of a new [to me] 2001 XK8 Coupe with what I believe is a noisy (engine frequency chirping) water pump. Much of the plastic cooling parts were recently replaced by an excellent Jag mechanic and he also installed a new metal thermostat housing putting in new Jag coolant. I planned to change the water pump myself since I understand it’s relatively straight forward.

I’d like to use OEM parts and I see that Ford offers an AJV8 T-Bird water pump [Part #: PW448 (8501)] for $208 that looks extremely similar to the $257 Jaguar water pump assembly [Part#: (AJ88912)].

I guess it’s only $50 difference and I know there are more inexpensive sources for both parts. But I am curious if anyone knows whether the pumps are actually the same [the Ford and Jag] and therefore interchangeable?

Thank you in advance.

The Sticky "Non OEM Interchangeable Parts Thread" is an excellent source of information. By searching the thread for "water pump" I found the following:

Hope this helps,

85nova, those prices you mention are way out if bounds. As I recall one can purchase new pumps for less than $50 on Amazon, on line at oriely auto parts, many other places.

If you are on the "west coast" of the US or Canada ,try Rock Auto. I bought a perfectly good pump from them for about $50cdn

Before jumping to conclusions, remove the serpentine belt and rotate all accessories, tensioner and idler by hand, and check for smoothness. Double check the condition of the belt for hints of unusual wear. There is more than one possible source for that noise. Granted, water pumps are cheap and the job is pretty straightforward, but still pretty messy and your coolant is new. Or if you think all these parts are original (idler, tensioner), change them just because, none of it is terribly expensive.

Remember the old line, something about spending way too much on a tie after spending a lot on a whole suit. I bet Ford or Jaguar do not actually "make" water pumps, parts suppliers do. I went with a Denso part because it came with that big o-ring and I figured the design calls for it. Others do not have that seal, and some call it unnecessary. Your car, your call of course.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

I've never had a bad water pump "chirp", just leak out the bottom. The chirp may be what I had, a bad tensioner, idler and serpentine belt.

Hope you check it first by removing the belt and see if the chirp is gone.

Good point - chirps are very common with bad idler pulleys. I tested mine by loosening belt, then tried to turn by hand. Not smooth, felt like steps (cha chunk ca chunk. . . ).

We all have different values on what quality of parts we use. i bought a (CANNOT RECALL THE NAME) pump off amazon for about $40.00, better constructed than what I took off which i assume was the original. The coolant pipe with gaskets needs to be changed: amazon. Same for many other parts. thermostat, again can't recall the name brand, was about $18.00. I know the jaq brand oil filter can be $25.00, but amazon again: Bosh is about $10.00 and it works just fine, etc....
Yes think Ford for many things...

Yes they are the same. Changed the pump on my 2003 this week. SNG Barrat has them for $76.00 You can get them cheaper, but with Barratt, just give them your VIN and be assured that it's correct.
