Smile Hello - Jaguar XK8 World :)

Hello from Germany

I´d like to introduce myself. I´m 33 years old and live in Germany (Bavaria).
I´ve bough myself a XK8 from the US (4.2L convertible - built 2004) with some "special" problems (rust, electrical stuff, transmission problems etc.) Well I didnt know that it had so many issues.
On the way getting the car working again i found this forum and it helped me really much. I hope to get some further tipps and i apologize in advance for my bad english :/

Greetings from Germany
Rob

Welcome to the forum. Very few US cars have rust problems as the northern ones are not generally driven in winter. Please present your problems.

Welcome. As you've seen there is a wealth of valuable information here. I don't know I would have bought my Jaguar if I had not known about this site. I read Forum posts for over a year before I decided to buy an XK8 - best (and most reliable) car I've ever owned or driven. By the way, your English is fine -- much better than my German.

John

The biggest problem is, that somehow very much water came in for a very long period of time.
The left side (driver and passenger behind the driver) is totaly damaged. I cant rly tell where it came from. If you want i can add some creepy pictures of the rust.
Also there is rust at the typical spots in the rear left and right (where the rear frame is attached) and behind the front carrier (sides).

Leaking rear window ..gets behind the frame then rusts a hole in the bottom edge and runs down into the area under the back seat and hence flows over into the rear . Then forward into the foot wells ...

Mine had a gallon of water under the RH back seat ...went over and under the carpet to rot out the drivers footwell. Also leaks into the boot and down into the sill area...
What I did ..
Small bead of silicone along the top edge of the window trim from front to rear ..it seems to pull away and rust behind any way.
The rear window surround is easy to remove prise up on the RHS about half way up and it arches up as its in two pieces L and R . Only problem is you may destroy the rubber seal so cut away whats crap and when its re fitted go around with silicone .Its held with clips not glue. The area around the glass acts as a water channel so it goes to the bottom and rots it out
You may find a hole /rust area bottom RH corner. I treated mine with marine epoxy ..the only thing that kills rust cus it takes 24 hrs to set and soaks into the rust.
Also check the rubber seal around the wire in the top RH corner of the boot flange ..its not where it fits the body but the little tube thing that comes up that perishes and lets the water in ..
Mine is dry now.
If its parked uphill the water goes into the boot ..if downhill into the sill../back seat area.

Send photos

Hi robak,
You have some work to do, although I see you have already made a good start.

Member XKR-DAY has been doing some superb body repair work on his XKR. Have a read through these threads. They are long, but they will help guide you and there are LOTS of pictures:

Good luck with it. This forum is an incredible source of information on these cars. We all share an enthusiasm for these cars. I never would have been able to get my 2000 running w/o the knowledge and support in here.
