Default I hope this isn't too stupid a question.

I purchased a 1998 XK8 in August of 2012. It only had one key & fob. When I used the fob to lock car, it sets alarm, but the doors aren't actually locked. Are they supposed to? I have purchased another fob on line and programmed it without any problem, it also sets alarm, but doesn't lock doors.

Definitely NOT a stupid question.

The doors should lock with the fob. Do they lock with the key and is it a black headed Master key or a green headed Valet key?

Here's how the fob should work:

The full details on locking/unlocking with key or fob are in the Security System Handbook for your Model Year. If you don't have this, you can download it (and the rest of the Handbooks) in PDF format from this link:

I didn't know about that 3-press panic alarm thing. I guess I should RTFM a bit more

On our UK spec models it's a dealer programmable option.

I'll not say any more and spoil your reading.

Graham,
Will he have the intensely annoying 'drive-away' locking on a US car?
If that works at least the BPM can 'see' the locks. I think it's the BPM that handles this.

Steve,

That's another dealer programmable option in the UK but is a.f.a.i.k. set ON from the factory by default for vehicles delivered in this country. US spec is probably, but not necessarily the same.

My XJ8L had been dealer reprogrammed to OFF by the PO but I had it reset.

Why do you find it annoying?

Passenger can't get in with the car in garage.
Passenger stands outside (in the snow)
Reverse car out of garage, doors lock.
Passenger (snow covered) grabs door handle + pulls
Nothing happens
Further deterioration of driver/passenger relationship.

.............. you do know all you have to do is pull on the driver's door handle to unlock the passenger door?

(passenger should still be in disgrace following the tractor coolant incident and not coming up with 'door handle attitude'.)

I'm old, you see.
Passenger expects snake-like reflexes not 'why can't she get in - aah yes the door's locked itself - I'll reach over and unlock it. Oh No I don't need to - all I've got to do is pull the driver door handle'
Passenger still in deep disgrace, tractor still in deep dismantlement.
Unfortunately I ordered the wrong radiator - the same MY tractor can have two different radiators. Bah!
Sorry, OP. I'll go away now.

Thanks GGG,
Both fobs are the same as pictured in your post. I have programmed both since the purchase of 2nd fob. They both beep & headlights flash when lock buttons pressed, but doors don't lock. I was thinking since it's a convertable, this was intentional, but apparently not. Is it likely that both fobs are defective?

Before digging any deeper do a system reset. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for 10 seconds and reconnect it. Try this a few times if it does not work the first time.

After this you will need to also reset your windows.

Please report back.

As the fobs have programmed successfully, it does seem a remarkable coincidence if both are faulty and being able to set the alarm suggests they are OK. The Driver's Door Module is therefore looking suspect. This is buried behind the speaker:

JTIS - XK8 Drivers Door Module.pdf

Unless the module itself has water damage, its harness and connections are more likely problem areas.

Graham,
Thanks for the door module pdf. It looks like a project I might be able to handle. I'll have to investigate getting a replacement module.
Thanks again,

White XKR,
I'll give that system reset a try first. If that doesn't work I'll give Graham's
suggestion a try.
Thanks,

After you do a hard reset and if that does not fix the problem you may want to look at the door locking relay and replace it with another like relay and see what takes place. It is in the RH Fascia FC24

There's no door unlock button on your dash?

Great! Occasionally the door module gets in an invalid state, probably from experiencing a power problem somewhere along the line.
