If it ain't one thing it's another... won't shift
Did the hydraulic hoses for the convertible latch on my 2000 xk8. Works fine now. While I was at it I replaced the shifter surround J gate with a used one, mine had cracked plastic. Problem; shifter won't come out of Park. Inside the J-gate I'm seeing a turntable thing, it has a plastic tab on it, is it supposed to come in contact with the metal "lock out" tab? Further, the brake light has also come on. I look forward to your ideas and suspicions....thanks, Bob
Hi Gus, I used your tutorial on the hoses, thanks a lot. Regarding the shifter, I don't know how to properly align it. I simply removed the old one, plugged it in,and screwed it down. I'd guess it ain't right...
I have photos but I am unable to access them right now but I will do my best from memory. Under the module is a rotating disk that makes contact with a micro switch. Did you align it with the “P” position of your shifter when you installed it? Now under the module you have 2 micro switches one is for “P” and the other is for “N” if for any reason you bent or modified the switch or the actuator? The other thing to check would be your connectors. It is tight in that area and you could have pulled a plug apart.
Like the title says...I'm getting pi$$ed off at the beast. Its on properly, checked fuses, connections, ect. With the shift illumination assy. removed, I can't shift out of Park unless I push the brake lock out tab manually. I assume that the brake lockout solenoid is the round metal gizmo that's about the size of a D cell battery with a shaft coming out to the little lever/tab? With key on, I get no clicking noise. With engine on I get no click when applying brake pedal. BONUS...! I'm now getting a performance reduced message, Transmission failed message, check tail lights message, and a brake light. I feel lucky indeed...Help,before I reach for the cyanide capsule and Luger...

Does the shift interlock work with the illumination module plugged in?
The shifter illumination module is a CANbus network listen-only module, but it is possible it contains the network termnation resistor and may take the network down when it is unplugged.
Disconnect the battery, then plug everything back together. Once it is all back together reconnect the battery. Hopefully that will bring you back.

Tried it, she's not willing... I can drive it by sliding a screw driver under the illumination assy, to take it out of park. I'm told that if the cruise control won't engage, that it's probably the brake switch. Opinions?
Bob I'm going to go out on a limb here. When you switched your latch hoses you didn't by chance pinch a wire. When I changed mine I was installing the visor clip and pinched the wire on it. This wire is wired into one of the sensors or switches in the J gate that will not let you shift out of park. I'm not sure which fuse it was but it's in the drivers side fuse panel either # 6 #7 or #16. I think it was #6. I would check these fuses and see if it blown, and then check your wiring.

Doug and Gus are" The Men of the Hour"! Gus suggested that I check all three thousand fuses on the beast. I checked them without pulling each one out individually, just visually checking with a Maglite. They looked OK. Doug (RC Sign) suggested that I check the specific fuse (16,drivers side door jamb location) that controls some of the interior stuff and the brake lock out. I had inadvertently shorted the visor mirror light when I removed the header piece to install the new latch hoses. Changed the fuse, presto!Shifts like a real car! I am very grateful to these guys and this forum. Truly saved me some cash. I will put the cyanide pill and Luger away for now...

Glad to hear you got her back up and running. This has happened many times before, I read it on the forum when it happened to me. When I read your post it sounded familiar. Happy motoring.
