Hi All,

I plan to remove the original prior rear axel mufflers and replace them with straight pipes and just keep the original front mid muffler, on the rear I have straight stainless pipes. Anyone that can share some experiences..?

Cool Salo, You are so cool!

Salo,

Let's get this straight! In other words, you have removed the Mufflers behind the Rear-Wheels and now you are going to remove the little silencers and leave the Center Collector as the only silencer/Muffler in the system.....Is that right? What? What did you say, "I can't hear you!"! Well, you probably can't hear me either...........It's just a drone all the time....Please put some kind of a Muffler on the Rear, so you can hear your sound system...It's OK to remove those little silencers as they don't do any thing anyway.....but please put some Mufflers on the rear..........

CAN YOU HEAR ME???

Billy Clyde has a point. That will be too loud and obnoxious and will definitely grow old fast.

Tested and true setup many have tried and enjoy, including myself is the following: replace center resonator with either an X - pipe or an H - pipe, remove the before axle silencers and either leave the after rear axle or replace with flowmaster/glasspacks/magnaflows/borla silencer. Straight pipe the rest. The result is that drone should be minimal and the sound produced is beautiful. The X pipe will allow some pops to be heard when you let off on the gas pedal. I think the after rear axle silencer you choose can influence whether the sound is raspy or smoother.

Optionally, you could change your cats to a nameless performance 200 cell cats and change your downpipes if you want to be thorough.

Wink I did it, removed the "before rear axel" mufflers

Hi Gents,

I now did it, modified my exhaust as planned, see video below, it drons at 1500 rpm, but at higher rpm than that it's really not much difference inside the coupe, anyway - I like it a lot this way and am happy with it..I guess it's all a matter of taste, like if You prefer rum, brandy, whiskey or scotch

Sounds good. I am guessing would be too loud for a convertible.

I am curious about performance changes with all that straight through pipe and no tuned back pressure. Anything notable?

Like!

I love the burble at tickover. Our cats sound just too refined stock.

@Billy - sorry, I didn't quite catch what you said

nothing I noticed - but let me do a performance check and measure it and I get back with real facts regarding HP and NM, original she has 363 HP and 505 Nm torque at 3000 rpm

I have a 2002 XKR and had the mufflers behind the rear tires removed as well as the mufflers closer up to the front but left the big muffler box (dont know what it's called). It's loud but not any louder than a classic muscle car. I get compliments all the time about how great my XKR sounds, including guys at the Jag dealership.

it might be fun to install four of those remote exhaust bypass valves, one set ahead of the rear silencers and another ahead of the rear resonators. can have both combinations and even try them on a dyno conveniently.

i don't know much about modifying the center setup as v8's often benefit from the scavenging effect of the opposing bank's exhaust velocity. it makes up for the uneven firing pattern.

How loud is too loud? Personal preference.

I've been running without rear mufflers and a straight through SS zaust for about 10yrs in total, indeed before 2015 I didn't even have catalytic converters and used SS bypass pipes. However they changed the laws in the UK in 2015 and if it came out of the factor with Cats then they needed to be present at MOT time.

There is usually also prevailing legislation regarding noise, as my MOT place stated they can only really enforce that if they have a stock exhaust car in the garage to compare it to.

As Wdesign states it sounds like a classic muscle car and draws a lot of positive comments. I find it totally acceptable for everyday use and actually prefer to listen to the car than music sometimes.

That said I run a coupé and am insulated from most of it...although it is fun to put the windows down and blip the throttle through tunnels/canyons. On occasion I get thumbs ups from far more powerful cars such as GTR's and Aston's

The only downside is that it does get quite a lot of attention with people walking around the car or coming up to compliment it. sadly it's usually octogenarian men and not young hotties!

If too loud you could always introduce a glasspack along the exhaust
