Default just bought 2002 xkr

OK, added 2002 XKR to my garage and need to know what I need to know !!!
49500 miles mfg date 9/01 A25845. Probably will have to change the trans gasket and other stuff. Need another key and remote fob, tires ok, everything else seems to be ok... no leaks, will put it on my lift tomorrow (have a 89 xjs). Do all my own work but new to this model. Need to get a good parts book, maintenance manual, and what ever you recommend.

Your turn !!!

Thanks,
Ken in WV

Welcome. There are a lot of great things in the Sticky section, from Manuals to JTIS shop manual. Do you have any service history? Things to check include Secondary chain tensioners, hydraulic hoses to the top latch, and low voltage battery. If the battery is over 4 years old or if it's below 12.5 volts when checked in the morning replace it. It is amazing how many codes and warning lights can be caused by low voltage.

Welcome to the XK forum, here's the info in the DIY you should familiarize yourself with. A XKR has mostly a XK8 base, the good news is you have the Mercedes 722.6 transmission which is much easier to work with and has very few problems. Drive the car a bit and then post on any specific question / problem you think you have, you ask people here everyone will have changed a part at some point and think you need to do it too!

I’m buying a used XK8/XKR, what should I look for?

I know mine was mfg in September 01 and I will have to put it up on my lift to check the mfg date of the engine to see if it is before or after Jag replaced the timing chains. Also the water pump. Confused about which Code Reader will be good for this car. Too many options !!! Any comments on that ?? Need another key and remote. Remotes are on EBay but have not seen where you could buy a key other than Jag ?? Will check a local dealer who might pull up service records for me to see what all has been done by a dealer in the way of maintenance.

Regarding code readers, my iCarsoft i930 scanner is made specifically for Jaguar and Land Rover. It is capable of reading quite a few modules on these cars that standard code readers cannot (transmission, ABS, restraint, door, etc.). But do your due diligence before you decide whether or not to order one. They seem to work well for some models and not as well for other models. And you need to know that iCarsoft's customer technical support is essentially worthless. Back in early February I paid about $125 on amazon.com with free shipping. I'm keeping my i930 because it has worked relatively well on both of our two Jaguars....

welcome and enjoy the drive!!!

As mentioned - the stickies are the best starting point, followed by Gus's website
JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource

between the 2, you have most everything you need at your finger tips

for parts manual - contact SNG Barratt's and ask for their XK8/R parts catalog

That first question out the chute in your post?? You should have researched BEFORE you bought.
This is the car you had shipped to ya for 8k? That is a deal on xkr with low miles. Call Jag USA, with the vin they can tell you what dealership it was sold through and any open recalls if not fixed, and can tell you any recall/warranty/TSB work done to the car.
Appears you have the older timing chain issues based on 9/01 build date. I would get those looked ASAP, low miles does not mean GOOD SHAPE with these cars all the time. Low mile cars tend to have just as many issues as others. Since it has been sitting based on said miles and if you start driving it as you say you plan, I would be prepared to do some cooling system hoses, WP, front suspension bushings sooner or later if they are still good.
If you are the dude I spoke to on the phone, none of this we will type here is stuff I told ya about. Drive her, don't let it sit.
I would go ahead now and check the battery, have it load tested, if below 12.5 volt consider replacing.
Others will chime in.

As for any cooling system leaks, provided it is still running the orange coolant, look for dried up orange on parts around clamps, seams on any of the parts (tstat housing, resivor tank). That is typically a sign that you have had leaks that will come back. Look at the connections at both sides of the octopus hose for signs of leakage.

For a Key Fob, the Cheap, $8 Ford Units on E-bay will work, but if you have a spare key, you may want to make your own Flip Key

Search "FCC CWTWB1U322" on E-bay for the original and compatible remotes
