Question My turn to ask for help! - RESOLVED

I removed the top hydraulic latch to send it out for reseal. Reinstalled last night and refit the overhead bits and tested the top and latch with no issues. Then I plugged in the connections for the overhead console and the sun visors. Put the key in to start the engine and the steering wheel went weird. Went to full aft and full down and started to twitch to and fro. Nothing I did would stop the gyrations Turned the knob on the side off to no avail. Started the car and tried to back it out of the barn and the solenoid wouldn't retract. Noticed that the overhead courtesy lights are not working either. What the hey? It is like it's possessed! Any suggestions besides a bible and holy water?

I have heard that the fasteners for the visors can PINCH and SHORT wiring on dis and reassembly cause all SORTS of strange havoc... weirdly mixed into many systems to do with lighting timers, locking and things hooked into the over all lighting and timer systems around the (maybe) alarm....? I would (quickly) remove the visors and check for wire damage around the bolt ins and the wiring for the visors themselves...... that's just me...

You know what you touched, so I would start backing out the parts you reinstalled until the problem goes away (or you see something that is damaged).

My guess would be that you shorted a wire when reinstalling the sun visors but that certainly is a fascinating combination of problems.

The wiring schematics may give you a clue as to what could affect the steering wheel. You don't mention whether it's the '01 or '03 you're working on, but you can download the Electrical Guide for either one at jagrepair.com, courtesy of our member Gus.

Cheers,

Don

+1

Pull the plugs to the vanity lights in the centre overhead console. Fuse #7 in the drivers' side fusebox is meant to protect things in this event - but it doesn't always catch things in time.

Take a look at this thread of K.Westra's and see if the symptoms are similar:

There are some further links in the thread that may help you diagnose. Fingers crossed it's not the BPM

Thanks all for your help. With the info provided, I found the culprit to be the driver's side sun visor lighting wires were pinched. Removed that plug and replaced 15 amp fuse and all is well.
