tried out the CReader VIII scanner I purchased. I got a P1798 - CAN INST token message missing. Ignition on but not running.
What does INST mean?

That could be an indication that you are connected with the wrong protocol. You may have to force the protocol, see if there are options.

 

A CAN token is when the TCU and the ECM are not talking. You had no other codes? Chances are the TCM is in trouble or a bad ground. That is my $.02ȼ

 

Clear it. Does it come straight back -> genuine fault, else ignore.

Can't choose the protocol, chose the manufacturer.
I'll clear it and see what happens.

 

INST is instrument. The INST PK is the GATEWAY to the CAN BUS.
Look at the electrical guide and you will see the NETWORK page near the end of the guide. The DLC goes to the INST and then on to the modules on the CAN bus all the way to the end which is the ABS.

Both the INST and the ABS have 'terminating' resistors so the network 'INTACT' should have about 60 ohms.

I cleared the code and it has not come back. I think it was a low voltage issue.
Still learning to use the CReader VIII.
