Default Pulling the shocks, should I replace upper bushings while I'm there.

So I have a bad lower busing on one of my shocks. This is not the spring seat but actually the busing where the shock attaches to the lower control arm. It is cheap - a $28 aftermarket part from SNG but I will need to pull the shock to press the old out and the new in.

So I am wondering if I should replace the upper shock mount bushings while I have the shock off. The car has the foam rubber style upper mount and the foam is dried and flaking at the outer edges, but it is still firm around the center hole. I would not replace it now if it weren;t for the fact the shock must come off anyway.

If I replaced it I figure I would try the urethane ones from black dog. Does anyone use these and have a report? I don't want to hurt the ride at all, i would be using the urethane so I would not have to worry about it again.

FWIW it is a 01 XKR with 101k which is garaged. The PO replaced the springs and also put in urethane lower spring seats. They were new when I got the car with 90k

Yes change them. They are deteriorating as you noted and you will already have most of the labor done when you pull the shocks.

It will save you doing it again in a few miles.

With new bushings, springs and shocks, you should be good to go for a while.

I just replaced the upper shock mounts and shocks on mine. 90% of the knocking sound is gone. But, there still is a bit of knock. So, I'm going to order from PowerflexUSA - XK8 - XK8R (97+) various polyurethane rubbers. Have you checked them out? Do you have a URL for Black Dog?

Here are the ones I am talking about:

mja2170bd.kit - Shock Mount Bushing Kit

Black Dog is the manufacturer I believe:

Jaguar Upper Shock Bushing Kit

Recently completed the front shock mounts bushing and new shocks with a kit from Welsh Ent. Pair of upper bushings poly mounts kit (and spring assisters) for both sides were $232 plus S&H ($8). I cked the Black Dog and they seemed to be more expensive. The poly bushing and pads from Welsh were easily installed and made the front end feel TIGHT again. raised my ride height from 14.5 back to 15.6". Used same springs. Appears Camber is back to normal.

Wayne (cjd777) and I will be using the same Welsh Enterprises poly kits that kstevusa describes above on my wife's 2006 XK8 approaching 99,000 miles. The original shock mounts are deteriorating now and I'm hoping that the new poly kits will correct my negative camber as well. No noise or poor ride/handling characteristics yet, just too much inner treadwear on the front tires (they lasted nearly 49,000 miles). So we'll be doing this job (along with new Bilstein front shocks and new poly upper control arm bushings while we're in there) because I just installed new front Yokahama YK580 tires this past Monday and I want them to go the distance just as the previous YK580s did....
