I have a guy who is going to respray other bits of the car for me but says this is too minor for him. I would not mind having a go myself but need advice. Anyone repaired , resprayed or replaced these?

Repair for now and watch out for good second hand replacements on ebay here or the US.

Frank, are you going to take it off or in place. Off would be better as I bet it's even more rusty on the inside.
Sand, primer, sand, primer until smooth, then the final coat.

I am going to try and take it off to do it. I think I have found the paint for it on ebay complete with can of lacquer coat for around £17. Expensive for a tin of paint but hopefully worth it.

Would prefer to take it off as you can get a better finish on it, and not the car, also it may well be rusting underneath. I will not know until I actually get it off. One or two other jobs to do before hand. Taking it for a Hunters alignment next week. Should be interesting as its never been aligned since new as far as I can tell.

Good link and info thank you. However the later messages confused me slightly referring to lifting up the trim in the middle, I assume they were talking about the boot/trunk of the car?

Just been out and tried to lift mine off. It wont budge. I do have a trim removal tool, the flat bit of strong plastic, but I am worried about damaging the paintwork of the door.

If it's on really tight, removing the door card will allow you to get a better grip and pull it upwards.

It shouldn't need any tools.

I'm wondering if some of the early cars had them glued on since I never was able to get mine to come off. I know JTIS says the mirrors need to be removed, but I didn't try it that way and just did it in place.

It has to be lifted clear right up to the mirror and then slid rearwards to release. As can be seen form the photo in post #7, I didn't need to remove the mirrors on my 2005 XK8.

When I get brave I will give it a go. I think the secret of this is to find a bit that will lift and work the rest out. There is no rush. My car does not go in for its respray/touch ups until December. Still very busy with other bits and pieces.

Its going in next Thursday for a Hunters Alignment so will also get a good look underneath then too.
