Hey I own a Jaguar XK8 2001 from Georgia that I'm currently restoring.
For context - I'm just learning the car had been sitting for a year after engine work because the last owner was a collector with 50 cars and left it outside.
Now when the car first got here, I lubricated a lot of things like the mirrors because they didn't move at all. I physically moved them and then the switch was able to move them for a week till they stopped moving all over again, the one on the left turns only left and right slowly (horizontal).
If anyone knows what the remedy is to this please do tell, and the process in doing so. I'm not sure if it could be the switch after pulling a scan on the car but anything is worth a shot, even dismantling the mirror for a permanent fix. (The car is a daily driver not a statue anymore).
Ignore the othee issue codes, I've already gotten a remedy on the way, just need to solve how I'm going about the mirror situation
It's the driver's door switchpack in the door-card that usually goes bad. Press on the memory buttons (assuming they're programed) and observe to see if the mirror changes position. If it does with no issues, it's the switchpack that needs replacement.

Thanks for your reply, over the course of 5 weeks, (I've been using the car for short trips daily) the memory settings showcase the same situation the switch pack is producing making me believe the problem must be in the mirror.
There's very different settings between 1 and 2, the second one was made when I got it to temporarily move before not moving again. And that also has a problem moving the mirrors and right (passenger side) being not at all.
So it's not the switch pack, but I can dismantle and repair it or inspect it just to confirm and rule out.

Good luck dismantling it. A thousand tiny little bits and pieces will come flying out never to be seen once you open it up. First check the continuity of the switch pack and the mirror with a multimeter before you start attempting brain surgery on that thing.
GREETINGS, my 01 XK8 side mirrors were not pivoting in/out, removed swithchpack, cleaned (so I thought) using 99% alcohol. Reassembled. Then passenger window wouldn’t go down. Disassembled again. Cleaned copper board with pencil eraser (gently) and “M” shape pivot wire. Got window back functioning, but mirror is same as was. Replacement’s are about $200. online.

Last night I ended up confirming it was the switchpack, then I made another discovery. The last owner or whoever it was, decided to glue the connection into it.... So I'm going to have to replace the wire harness that going into the door as well unfortunately.
Just an update/resolution I made to the problem. Despite the discouragement to dismantle the switch pack. I did it anyway, I have gotten two from a junk yard but both felt even worse and since my wire harness is glued to the switchpack I decided to first take apart the ones from the junk yard to see how they are assembled.
Compared to other devices I've worked on, (Nintendo switches, PlayStations and steam decks) this was a piece of cake compared to those to dismantle clean and assemble. At least to a technician. To a diy'er for a first time it would be a bit frustrating. But for the ambitious-
-First you want to hold it upside down(keep it this way the whole time)
(I had to do it with the wire connected but if you can remove it it's easier.)
-Use a flat heat to remove the plastic clips from the body
-Carefully take it apart and take pictures of how it was assembled and remove the rubber panel, the plastic and you now have access.
-Clean the button point on the board, it should be a goldish/Cooper looking circle with a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol. And also clean the rubber that makes the connection to it. In my years of working on controllers, it matters as well. Then reassemble and it should work fine.
Just be sure to put the rubber in first before the board, if you do it with the rubber on the board it will fall out or not sit right.
While I was doing this I also changed the switch bulbs to led, much brighter now and completes my car's look.
Thanks for all the responses! I hope this helps! Remember buying these parts won't come new they still need to be refurbished if the seller didn't do it themselves.
Thanks for the post and the insight on this issue, I am intrigued as I have the same/similar issue with mine that is on the list to address soon. However I am looking for a bit of clarification, although I think I know the answer already I would rather hear for sure from someone who has rectified the issue; and the question is this:
the part you dismantled and cleaned was the actual switch in the driver door to control the movement of the mirrors, as well as the windows, correct?”
please clarify for me when possible, thanks!

Yes, the switch that controls the mirror is what you're cleaning. Since I still have the two from the junkyard with one being dismantled still I can provide a picture.
After years, it's common for dirt and grease to make it's way in and disrupt the contact points. Just like controllers and other old devices. I just knew it was mine after I thought about the way it would not work, I'd have to click down multiple times till it made contact.
But do bare in mind. It's somewhat delicate when putting back together so be prepared to improvise a bit before clicking the peices back in if you haven't done something like this before.
Most people just replace it, and I'm sure the replacements work better mostly because the cars it's stripped from are garage kept or low miles.
This was a similar problem to a steam deck I bought to fix and modify
Thanks I appreciate the info! I also found when pulling my door panels off to replace speakers that my drivers side panel has been repaired in the past and that the “switch pack” you speak of on mine has had some messing around with due to obvious signs of epoxy/putty/glue on it. I didn’t mess around with it at the time because I had a lot of projects going on at once but after reading your post I am confident it needs some attention.
just fyi, this little guy doesn’t intimidate me one bit, even as delicate as it is. First thing I did to my xk8 was remove the ecu and recap it, and recently just spent over two months repairing an old alpine cd player with all new caps, some transistors, some smd/smt components including a 25 pin voltage regulator ic(a real pita!) but I’m happy to report it is functioning perfectly now! Thanks again!

Happy to hear that!! I had a lot of projects myself. And soon I'll be posting them once I get this carplay and new 3rd brake light design in.
Well it’s 330 am and I can say that with your help I now have full function of both my mirrors with the driver door switch. I took your advice and took it all apart and cleaned it and used a pencil eraser on the gold contact points(I actually learned that trick fixing a Nintendo nes) and cleaned rubber pad and everything. I reassembled it carefully, tried it and only had up and right functions on both sides…a step in the right direction either way.
took it back apart and cleaned again, then went over it with a magnifying glass and my multimeter checking every trace I could, and lo and behold I found a broken trace in the pcb, no continuity. Scraped green coating off of trace slightly and soldered in a tiny piece of copper wire to jump the break. Cleaned it up again and reassembled, reinstalled and bam, all functions work, both sides. Couldn’t be happier, thanks again for the info and pics helped a lot.
Broken trace scraped ready to solder, very hard to spot with naked eye Fixed trace
That's awesome! And I guess we're both on EST then, it's 3:40am right now. Glad you were able to make use of the advice. Another thing to make sleeping at night easier as I say!
Yeah I don’t get much sleep, my mind goes too wild and won’t let me rest, especially when there is an issue to address. I’m in western MA, just waiting for all these April showers to come to an end so I can drive this car like I want, but while it’s raining is a good excuse to work on it. Luckily I have it in an insulated garage with heat and air conditioning, I spend a lot of time in the garage so it needs to be comfortable lol
