Default Sourced some very good coils for cheap

We just pulled all the coil wires on my XKR and replaced the 4-wire leads with those from a Corolla. As is the case with many of us, your wiring, if it's not replaced, is likely losing efficacy due to the insulation flaking off like candy coating (because it is. It's literally biodegrading due to EU mandates).

I did a little research and found a set on Rock Auto for about $14 a piece on manufacturer's closeout. Crossmatching the part number, these "FAMOUS BRAND" coils actually turned out to be the Carquest Premium Ignition Coils (carried by Advance Auto Parts). Doing even more digging, I found these to be made by Wells, which is a decent OEM replacement supplier. The price on the Advance Auto site for the same exact EBC1805 coils is $116.99 a piece (!).

They came in and look really good, right on par with the Denso. They work great so far. https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/fa...tion+coil,7060

I did the same thing with RockAuto. “Famous Brand” part number correlated to NGK. When came Delphi. They only had one bolt hole. Told RockAuto. They refunded and said keep them.

I am inclined to describe budget parts as a “very good deal” after they have endured the test of time and mileage for a decade, or at least a few thousand miles and a driving season.

and not immediately after a successful installation and initial drive.

They did pass the initial sniff test and, having seen some really garbage coils, was pretty surprised. But yes, if I still have this car in 10 years and the coils are still going strong, I'll be more inclined to give an endorsement as a good value. But by then, Rock Auto will be only available by the Musk-brand cranial wifi and our cars will be outlawed on three planets.

A friend in the UK buys from Rock Auto regularly and gets very fast delivery. I'll ask if he does anything 'clever'.

Just asked him and he says he just orders like all his mates with US trucks in the UK. So, you should be able to order them and confirmed an amazing delivery time.

Don't bother. Got two coils & the "famous brand" was Carquest & they are made in china. I guess they ran out of the good ones...

If you want some, I could forward them if you want. Just send me a PM if interested. My son and his wife live in Japan so I am well versed in international shipping.

With Rock Auto, Famous Brand doesn't necessarily mean "budget brand" even if the pricing is really good. Usually it means it is a surplus selling for Way way less than the manufacturer allows. So the way around that is by marking them as famous brand. Though it is true that it could be a crappy brand, it's most of the time not the case. Though I guess famous brand is a bit subjective.

I don't know what the insulation on some cables is made of, rodents love it! (It must be a form of recycling.) It's terrible how it deteriorates with heat and time.

Indeed, a local shop owner told me a lot of cable sheathing are made from soy (!)

I think they're bioplastics made from plants (yes, including soy), and several brands use them. According to Google's AI, Ford does too. Interestingly, that's why my daughter (as I've mentioned before) found one side of the heater in her Peugeot wasn't working; the dog had chewed through a wire under the seat. I spliced in a new piece, and it worked again. What can be done to combat the deterioration that is exacerbated by heat, weather, oil, etc.?
