Default Speed sensor in tranny

I have an 04 XKR that shows a trans code of 715. The speedo display shows transmission fault and the car is stuck in second gear. It always resets when I turn the car off. My mechanic says this is a speed sensor located in the transmission that he can replace for $1000-1200. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

Whilst I claim zero knowledge on the mysteries of automatic transmissions, pages 20 and 21 of the following Jaguar OnBoard Diagnostics for the ZF 6HP26 Transmission will at least explain what your mechanic is talking about:

Jaguar OnBoard Diagnostics - ZF 6HP26 Transmission.pdf

P0715 = Transmission ISS
ISS = Input Shaft Speed Monitor

Well the transmission fault went away for awhile and is now back. Yesterday the upshift from first to second gear was harsh and the fault displayed. This happened several more times starting with a harsh upshift. Each time I turned the car off and the fault display disappeared. Then today the fault returned without a harsh shift along with the engine light in the tach instrument housing. Next both of those lights went out and then I got a transmission high temp display several seconds later.

My mechanic has been in contact with 2 Jag dealers and they advise there is a faulty connection somewhere. Thoughts anyone

There is some interesting information in this manual. Shows the diagnosis processes involved and how to do the repair.

I just went through this last month on my 2002 XKR. First I started getting a transmission fault code where it did not seem to affect the driving at all over the first few days. I had it scoped and it came back with the same speed sensor problem. It progressively got worse with hard first to second shifts on occasion. Every time I restarted the car, fault disappeared and tranny went back to normal. Finally, tranny would get stuck in 5th gear (2002 only had 5). Had the gearbox checked and the gears were okay but sensors and solenoids were replaced, problem came back almost within first mile. Had the wiring harness to the shifter swapped with a used one, broke down after a day, sent the car to Jaguar dealership, where they replaced shifter unit, got the car back, and on second day back tranny fault code returned twice. I was not happy to put it mildly. I am rescheduling appt. with Jaguar when they get some other parts I am waiting for, but code has not returned for the past two weeks. I hate misdiagnosis aka guessing. Good luck.

If you have changed the solenoids and shifter harness, I would be suspicious of the control module. You car has the Mercedes W5A580 tranny and I am not familiar with it but the TCM is about all that is left. Check the harness to it first, then run the diagnostics on it.

Hello Tberg, did you get this problem sorted fully?
I have same problem, code reads P0715 info from Mercedes sites says to replace TURBINE INPUT SPEED SENSOR which is on a plastic plate. I cant find anyone who has replaced this part in a Jag, they just replace the Gearbox. Mine has only done 45000 mls so seems a bit drastic to do that for sake of a sensor. Any info most welcome. Thanks

Dear Johnmc,
Yes, fortunately, we replaced the speed sensor alone, and so far, after a week or so, no codes have reappeared. Sensor plus installation cost me about $425.00. My one concern is that I replaced this sensor once before about a year ago when I was having same code as well as others. But we'll see what happens. So far so good.

Default Tranny fault - abs light too

My 1998 Jaguar XK8 had the transmission replaced. It has not run right since delivery back to me. Would not stay in gear. After many adjustments, the transmission repair place told me to replace the neutral safety switch which I did. The abs light comes and goes and the transmission slips from time to time. One of my friends who owns one of these Jags said it most likely is the wheel to transmission sensor that is causing the problem. Is the sensor normally included in a transmission replacement - do I have a warranty claim if that is the problem?
