Default Steering Column Auto Movement

I must say that my 05 XKR has been one of the most trouble free Jaguars I have ever owned. The first problem is very minor and would like to know if anyone out there has any ideas. I have it set so that when you remove the key, the steering wheel rises up out of the way. When you get back in and insert the key, the column is supposed to lower back into place. What mine does is it moves very slightly and other times it moves all the way. It always does something. I can take the key back out and when putting it back in, it moves all the way. I can push the memory button and it will go into place. I figure if the switch was faulty, it would not do anything sometimes but it does move each time, just not all the way. Hope I have described the problem adequately and appreciate any feedback.

Completely normal operation!

That was how the British engineers designed the Jaguar.

Do you know why the British drink their beer warm?

Lucas makes their refrigerators also!

British electronics just do not function as expected in the rest of the world.

Your steering column just needs time to get into it's pre-programmed spot before you start your car. Insert key and turn half way, this allows the steering column to get into position and it allows the fuel pump to pressurize. When your wheel is in position start car and go about your business.

The steering column moves initially and will not move anymore unless you remove the key and do it over or push the memory button once started. Other times it moves right in to position. The sensor that tells the column to move senses when the key is inserted. It does not seem to matter if you turn it partway or start the car after you insert it. Just wondering why the intermittent partial movement. It moves everytime, just not all the way all of the time.

I would suspect the potentiometers in the column. Movement is initiated when the key (or any object for that matter) pushes open the chrome door covering the ignition switch.
The motors (2) in the column start to move the column. The potentiometers(2) feed the column position to body processor module. If there is any corrosion or dirt in the pots
motion ceases. Recommendation clean the pots. Use a good contact cleaner.

Default Same problem

I had exactly the same issue on my '05 XK8. the dealer found a defective potentiometer and repaired it under warrenty. Now it always works as it should.

Sometimes mine moves into place, sometimes it doesn't. I have come to believe that a Jaguar is like a woman, totally unpredictable.

exercise the tilt/reach daily to try to self clean the 'teeth'. Sometimes it helps if the 'auto' wasn't used much in its life.
