Too much oil at top up - is this a problem
I have put a tad too much oil in at the latest oil/filter change
Level is above the Max hole on the dipstick (at the "A" of MAX) so probably about 300 ml too much. Is this likelyto cause any problems? I really dont want to have to go and drain some off if not as it's a real PITA at the moment.

Thanks for the reassurance chaps - weight off my mind - I'd read all sorts of horrors about foaming oil from crankshaft splashing/flinging - but then I read a thread saying some overfill by 1L if "racing" to prevent oil pump starvation under acceleration or around curves.
As a matter of interest with these engines how much is too much?

Depends on the engine. My wife's 2006 XK8 has the 4.2 engine and specifies 8.2 quarts. I just stick with 8 even. That engine is probably just fine plus or minus a quart. I believe your 4.0 engine requires less oil so the plus or minus margin may be somewhat less....
Thanks - Jag specify 7.5 litres (8 US quarts) for my 4.0 engine.
My OCD got the better of me
so I pumped the XS out this afternoon - I forgot I had a hand pump used for emptying the sump on my canal boat engine - needed a bit of fine bore oxygen tubing from work to go down the dipstick holder and now I'm happy as the level is spot on the Max mark

Lol, I have the other kind of issue of underfilling and make sure I do.
The diesel engine has a nasty habit of dumping fuel into the oil if it doesn't complete regen cycles. To combat this it involved regular oil changes, perhaps 3-4 per year and I ALWAYS only fill to just above the minimum.
