Default Transmission slipping above 3,500 rpm

The sage continues. Just finished rebuilding the engine on my 2000 XK8. During the rebuild we drained the transmission fluid and replace the filter. The engine seems to be working fine but the transmission appears to be slipping. If I drive slow and do not rev the car above 3K rpm's the car is ok. But if I step on the gas a bit aggressively, or go over 3K rpm's, the transmission slips, shifting is not that great, and sometimes the yellow light on the speedometer comes on for a second as the transmission is slipping. I also can smell the odor of burnt transmission fluid when the transmission is slipping. I did not drive the car before the engine rebuild, so I do not know how well the transmission worked before buying the car.

I do not get any error codes on the message center. What could be wrong? Could this be from the transmission fluid being low and I need to add more fluid? Since the entire system was purged, maybe I need to check the fluid level a few more times. I also read that jaguar issued a TSB recommending the use of a anti-slipping additive, but I think that was for the 4.2 cars with the 6 speed tranny. Can you use the anti-slip additive for the 4.0 cars with the 5 speed tranny? Any other suggestions? Hoping I do not need to rebuild the tranny. If I do need to rebuild the tranny, what am I looking at in terms of cost? Would a rebuilt unit make sense, or just fix the existing unit?

Thanks for the help.

'A' drum failures are often the problem. I would get the TCM scanned for DTCs or you can guess what is wrong. Do a search for 5HP24 A drum failure.

Problem solved. We needed to add more fluid.

proper temperature of the fluid to determine the proper 'quantity' sealed inside are critical. Glad that solved your problem.

Default Good news on the low fluid fix

I would have bet my money on low fluid. Being low is certainly better than having too much. Too much might have blown a seal. Sometimes when a seal blows it leaks untill the proper level is reached and than it seals again. In other words the seal distorts enough to leak and then returns to it original size and position. I have had that happen a few times. (not in Jaaguars and only on new rebuilds where the seal are flexable) You can only hold your breath and wait. I don't know if that transmission has an air vent that would allow escape of excess fluid. Any way... being too low was very good news.

I am a little concerned that I may have cause substantial wear on the transmission with low fluid. We had to about about 1.5 quarts. Any input?

that's hard to quantify, just cross your fingers and think good thoughts.

I am having a similar problem with a 2001 XKR I just purchased with only 25K miles. When first start out, the transmission doesn't seem to engage sometimes. It will hesitate for a moment, and then engage a few seconds later. If I move the shift lever back to park and then into gear again, it will normally work fine, but I am concerned I may have a larger problem. I just had the car in for service and the tranny fluid level was fine. Anyone have any ideas?

You said it right. Your are having a similar problem, but they are really different. The slipping that kdross experianced is very typical of low fluid. Yours is not. Although, you stated that you just had the car serviced and the transmission fluid was fine that may not be true. If you study the threads on transmission fluid in this forum you might wonder if your fluid level was checked. It's not an easy task for the inexperienced.

Agree w/ martin, if the level wasn't checked by the dealer, or someone that can quote the proper temperature of the transmission fluid that equates to a 'full' level, then I would have it 'rechecked'. Temperature is critical as it expands as it warms up. Too much is bad...too little is bad..you must be fairly accurate when checking this. At least with the dipstick, that should be easy...did you add one to your merc tranny?
