I keep clearing and receiving "transmission fault" warning lights on my '99 XK8 with the codes saying "torgue converter failure, electrical" or an open circuit on the pressure solenoid. I am thinking about just replacing the entire harness and be done with it. The transmission was rebuild 3 yr and 40,000 miles ago. Has anyone done this? Known issues?
Seems it can be done without removing the transmission and just dropping the cover? Is this correct?
When I clear the codes it run great for a week and then the limp home mode.
Any insights?

LaRue - I had my tranny rebuilt last spring and about 3 months later started getting transmission fault warnings. Took back to where it was rebuilt and the identified the cable harness was faulty and replaced it - no issues since - runs like a champ.


Correct just have to drop the pan to replace

The internal wiring of the transmission leads to a circular multiplug on the rear of the transmission casing. From here it's a new lead going to a square megaplug in a bracket on top of the front part of the casing above the torque converter.


From the rotary switch it's a lead to the afore mentioned megaplug.


I would check and clean all these plugs before replacing the harness. Especially what I call megaplugs contain a large number of tiny pins which are easily bent.


The internal wiring may be changed without removing the transmission, just drop the oil pan.

Update- After reviewing the online information and videos I decided that going into a transmission was more than I could handle with no lift. I took it into my independent garage and the warning light and codes still said electrical. The "A" pressure solenoid was replace and then taken for a drive. Not good, pan was dropped and lots of metal particles in the bottom, something is broken! A rebuild should last more than 40k. Now a used unit with 36k on it is on the way to be installed. Glad I didn't try it myself but upset with the rebuilder.

 

Ouch - I would think you would get more than 40K as well!!!
