What do y'all think about a 6-speed?

What do y'all think about a 6-speed?
Ok, i was thinking about it, what would be required to put a 6-speed stick into my xkr.
1. Complete computer re-programing.
2. Custom Peddle assay and cut hole threw fire wall for mounting clutch cable/hydro That begs to be answered, hydro or cable setup?
3. Bell housing. These engines are simply ford of Europe v8's. I would think there has got to be some way to make a 6 bolt up. if not a adapter would be required.
4. probably custom shifter assay for the small area of the current j-pattern shifter.
Which clutch? will the current cross member work? which trans to use? Richmond? Tremec?
any ideas?

Well the good news is that the manual does not have a removable bell housing, SO if they both have the same bell housing then we are doing good. BUT if they don't. and the Jag auto and the BMW auto have a different bell housing. then there is 1 issue.
Can any one shed some light on this?

RE: what do y'all think about a 6-speed?
Hi,
Are there possibly more threads about an manual conversion on this site or others? I've looked around a bit but sort of come up empty handed.
I do not have a XKR, but I am considering buying one for a fun runabout/project. I'm looking into doing a 5 or 6 speed swap for the car. I know the motor is a European Ford engine, the AJ26S. As far as I can tell the engine was not mated to a manual transmission in any worldwide application.
An US Ford engine was built using the same block, For instance the AJ30/AJ35 variant was produced in Ohio and used in these cars:
[ul][*]2000-2002 Lincoln LS, 252 hp 267 ft·lbf[*]2002 Ford Thunderbird, 252 hp 267 ft·lbf[*]2003-2006 Lincoln LS, 280 hp 286 ft·lbf[*]2003-2005 Ford Thunderbird, 280 hp 286 ft·lbf[/ul]The pistons, crank, etc. are different in this version but many pieces are shared. But none of these cars here in the US got a manual transmission version either.
My racing partner just recently acquired a E39 M5 so I can have a look at that transmission pattern and see what it looks like. I'd find it highly unlikely that the 5L BMW motor and the Jag motor share the same rear pattern though.
So, with no manual transmissions being mated to this engine for production in the end it would be easiest to make an adapter plate. Fairly common with the racing hobby I fool around with so I'd not be adverse to doing this. However, one sticking point I could see might be the crankshaft. Does anyone know if the XKR motor has a machined relief in the end of the crank that could accept a pilot bearing? Clearly fixable but a bit more work to tear the motor down.
I don't think the adapter plate would be that hard to do once I got a used engine block to work with. Selecting a transmission of the right length wouldn't be hard either, and the flywheel, pressure plate, throwout bearing, etc. could be worked up and mainly taken care of with the flywheel design. Anyone one of the XKR motor is internally or externally balanced? Probably be in the shop manual.
I've not decided if I'll go ahead with the project or not but I've always loved the looks of the XK8/XKR. Just don't like the automatic transmission and I'd love to set one of these up for a club day track car.
Nice forum here, and enjoyable resource.
Best,
Ron

RE: what do y'all think about a 6-speed?
I have looked into converting my 2000 XKR to a manual transmission as well. I know that Elite & Performance Jaguar in England has converted an XK8 to a manual, however they still have not resolved the electrical issues with communication from the transmission & engine control modules. This is the largest obstacle to overcome, & may proove to be unresolvable. Another option which works quite well is to install a "Speedshift" from Paramount Performance. I can honestally it is the way to go, having installed the kit myself on my own XKR. It involves installing a small ECU-link harness to interupt the J-gate, a shift indicater light & the switch assy which mounts to the back of the steering wheel. This setup is as close to an F1 style shift you will find. I find it more fun to use than the paddles on the new XKR & much more responsive to driver input. I have owned an XJS with a factory 5-speed & find this to be much more fun to drive, it gives you an automatic transmission as well as the option of shifting yourself. You can up & downshift faster than you could with a manual transmission. The best part is the cost is no where near what a manual would potentially cost, is proven to work, & can be installed in app 4 hours, by anyone with basic mechanical ability. If anyone would like more info please let me know. This is just one of the many upgrades I have done to my highly modified XKR.

I could be wrong but probably not! That AM with the 6 stick has the Jaguar Engine but the 6 Stick shifts a rear Transaxle and has a long Tube that runs from the Engine to the Transaxle.....By the time you bought all the parts to do this little job….you could probably save enough money to buy the AM as is.....Oh! they are nice Cars...I drove one yesterday!
