Hello folks
I need to restore my headlights and after looking around for a tutorial on how to remove the glass lense I couldn't find anything short of John Dee's videos which are available on his You Tube Channel to view. I went with an alternate way to John's which proved to be a lot less time consuming though I would recommend you watch his entire video to get an idea of how to take them apart first.. I put mine in the oven and made a short video of how to do it yourself. Hope this helps somebody out.
God Bless.
Video is available to view on this link on my You Tube channel.
On a side note, does anyone know where I can find this internal turn signal cover or the part number? I didn't burn it in the oven but did burn it when I tried to remove the yellowing from it with a hot air gun.
Nice video but I think the real challenge is getting the overall headlight assembly removed from the vehicle. As an aside I do not need to remove mine but would like to know if there is an easy way to make a minor adjustment in the way the headlight is seated into the fender. I had the powerwash unit replaced a number of years ago and it has always bugged me that the guy that reinstalled the headlight didn't spend more time in getting it properly seated (outside edge stick out a hair more than I like instead of being flush to the body).
If you do a youtube search "To the Garage, headlights " you will find a video on the headlights, I did not need to put mine in the oven. I suspect the bolt behind the wheel arch liner has not be fitted..its a 3 point fixing
I'm not sure as I haven't got asround to looking for them yet. Do you mean the seals between the glass and the case or the seals between the 2 plastic cases?
Hi, just writing to say thank you for your very helpful video re-removing headlamp lens .....took quite a lot of visits to the oven ,but it eventually melted the bonding enough to remove the lens in one piece!!!
I expect you have sorted the turn signal lens by now ,but in case you still require one,I have one (left hand side ) you are welcome to
Thanks again.....Rich

Thank you for your considerate reply Dragstar. Just glad somebody was able to benfit from it. I have actually sorted out the plastic lense inside but thank you for your offer. They are like hen's teeth to find so if you put it on E-bay somebody might be looking for one. I made a new one from scratch because they are impossible to find so quite valuable in that regard.
Great, I have now melted my headlight lens/front section 🙄😢😢😢
I believe that the front lens section is available to buy new? Does anyone know where?
Thanks.
Regarding my 'melting' episode, I think I was slightly too hot, I had it at 160, checked with an infrared thermometer, if I was to get a second chance I would go with 130/140 and give it longer, say 10/15 mins, I have got mine apart however the plastic part is quite deformed, once out it appears to be a thin double sided tape, that's spongy holding the glass in.
Anyway, I had to try as the interior was shocking.
Info please on a replacement front lens section 👍
Cheers 😀
Sorry to hear about your melting episode. It's a bit hit and miss as I did this same removal with a different pair and melted one myself so ouch, I felt your pain there. Your probably right about going with a lower temp. for a longer duration and keeping a close eye on it. They are availablce to buy in sections on E-bay or even cheaper from Autoreserve.com
I'm sorted now with a second hand headlight, but yes 😳 I again had to remove the glass to restore the interior,.
So
Oven on hold this time 😁
This time, a clear work bench with an old towel on to protect the light, welding gloves as it will get hot and a quality hair dryer.
Go round and round on the glass only, get it toasty hot to soften the glue, gentle, very gentle pulling and the glass eventually came off 👍
Using this 'safe' method the plastic remains only warm as all heat is transmitted through the glass.
Patience is critical, take your time and it should be good👍
A little late for this info but the correct temperature is 200 F or 93 C for 2 to 5 minutes. You can take it up to 250 F or 120 C for 2 minutes max if the lens won't unstick.
The same temperatures are used to replace and bond the new lens sealant.
This is on my project list also. Does anyone know where to get a new lense only or sealant? Does the new lenses come with the bond sealant or can they be purchased separately?
I’m working through this refurbishment right now….broken top and bottom housing mounts, leaky lense seals and fading reflector silvering…..
I’ve never seen a new lense or lense housing to reflector housing seal sold separately. The only part I’ve seen has been the lense housing, lense assembly and seal sold as a set. Other than that, no spares appear to be available from Jaguar or Valeo.
