Default Modified Exhaust Systems (An Archive of Links to Previous Discussions)

Modifying the XJS exhaust seems to be a popular topic, so it makes sense to consolidate previous & future discussions into one thread, which can be easily found in the archives, and also posted into replies whenever a new member asks how to do it, if there are any pre-manufactured systems, headers, etc.

These are just a few discussions I can remember, but, by no means represents the entirety of discussions on the subject. I would like to see other members add comments, links to other archived discussions, vendor links, and, new (or old) ideas for their own custom exhaust systems.

Without further ado, here are a few links to get the ball rolling:

Sorry, I didn't post the finished product, and, I think I deleted the videos from Youtube, but, there is good discussion here about modifying the restrictive US market down pipes.

Cheers for the thread! I'm preparing to purchase a SS system without the resonators...

Cool!
I definitely look forward to reading about it, and hopefully seeing a video or two of the completed project, so we can hear it roar.

Thanks Scott.
Your last link on Tuning XJS Exhaust Sound is particularly interesting.
Seems that getting that screaming touch like in the Tasmania video is not that simple...

A great thread idea! I put electric cutouts on mine, I'll post up once I get the thread done.

When you figure out the formula needed to get an xjs to sound like the one in Tasmania, let me know. I want desperately for my car to sound like that!

I assume it has no mufflers and only a wider high flow exhaust which exits infront the rear wheels on both sides.

Go on Youtube and search for 'Black Pearl XJS'

I listened to the Black Pearl videos.
IMO, it does not sound like the Tasmania one, lacks some kind of whine at high revs.

The Black Pearl may not sound quite like the Targa XJS, but, Marko still has it sounding darn fine. From what I've seen of the Targa XJS, all 12 cylinders exit through a large collector in front of the rear wheel, on the driver's side of the car (right side).
I imagine much the same sound can be achieved on a dual exhaust setup by using a crossover pipe. That is assuming you also have reasonably large exhaust, that you have a free flowing intake system (an exhaust system can only expel as much air as the engine can suck in), and, that you have lightened your rotating mass as much as possible to allow for faster revs & faster deceleration, as the Targa XJS obviously has. Much of that crisp sound you hear is because the engine is able to rev so quickly & freely.

something like my Exhaust ALL 12 cylinders out of right side ,done 22years ago, still sounds awesome, because your ears hear all the sound from one place!!

Yep. You heard his newest add? The 12 throttle bodies with trumpets through the bonnet? Awesome sound! Awesome (ratty) XJ-S!

Jagzilla said it correct!. light weight rotating components, from front damper to converter.

listen to some of those exhausts , count how long,in seconds, it takes the engine to come and back to idle, from guessing 3000/4000 rpm, going up and back down to idle!

a quick rate would be around 1/ or 1 1/2 seconds, up and down, together!

I have a 2011 XK Coupe and would like to install electric cutouts. I have not been able to find any place so far to do the work in Northern Virginia. Suggestions on which ones to purchase? What size should I buy?
