Default Tecumseh HG500 AC Clutch Coil

Looking to get my ac working, tldr the ac clutch coil wire is gone. I believe the compressor is fine based on what the previous owner told me but for the life of me I can’t find anywhere that sells just the coil. Does anyone know of an alternate or shared part # that might work? It’s the Tecumseh HG500 compressor. Thanks!

You may want to try a small tractor shop or small engine shop. A lot of the lawn/garden tractors use simular clutch coils. Take the clutch & coil with you so they can match it up.

Thx I figured I’d ask here before I take it apart and start trying to figure out if I can find a match. Also looking if a used one might be had.

The E type used a special clutch which mounted with internal bolts (3 of the 6 that hold the front seal. They did this as the normal external bosses for the coil were machined off for the E type for fit. If your compressor has the 4 holes on the tabs for the clutch it is incorrect and will not fit well in the space. The Tractor parts supply is an excellent starting point.

Just for clarity we pulled this rather rare document from the files.. Note the drilled and tapped holes on the 4 tabs. Real E type HG500s have only a small amount of the tabs left and they were not drilled or taped. The cases were machined at an early point. Also note in the parts list no clutch or flywheel is listed. We are not sure but it is possible the coil and flywheel were sourced elsewhere but we have no data on that.

Thx for the detailed info. I had read the mounting was special for etype which is why you couldnt interchange with the hg500 found on VWs. I found a used clutch on eBay that passed the ohm test so once I receive it I have my fingers crossed that it will work.

LKE the normal issues are a worn friction surface or weak springs on the clutch. Most folks are not aware there were small rubber buffers stuffed between the clutch circles to stop the slapping noise on engagement and damp the springs a bit. Best of luck.

If I remember correctly, the air gap for the clutch should be ~0.020 of an inch. i.e. between the clutch plate and drive plate with the power to the coil disconnected.
