Angry '15 V6S - Driver's wind Noise is Driving Me Bunkers! HELP!!!

Re: 2015 Coupe V6S

Took my car to have the window metal trim repaired, it was lifting by the door jam on both sides common issue. During the repair, they ripped the window rubber seal so I had them replace it. The new rubber seal seems to have been installed properly but I have an annoying air leak very noticeable at above 70mph, I drive 80mph most of the time as my company is 2 hours from where I live. Dealer does not know what's wrong, they did adjust/closed the gap between the rear and front glass but that did not help.

I bought the car as a Prozac alternative, and it was a good decision as everytime I get at the wheel I leave my negative thoughts behind. Now, however with that annoying wind whistling noise, the enjoyment is gone. Dealer is Jaguar Troy so avoid these guys.

Any suggestions on how to fix? How can I get a hold of JLR? I'd like to talk to one of the seal trim engineers for options, I'm afraid I may end up selling the car as I can't deal with the annoying wind noise, car is out of warranty.

This is annoying and definitely not normal on these cars. I would start by using some painter's tape (which does not leave marks) and would seal over any possible causes, doing this selectively so that you can isolate the areas that might be the problem. If you have a helper you can get in the car and have the helper put the tape down the window edge after the door is closed because it might just be the glass against the seal of the rear side window or at the top. At speed the window glass tends to be pushed outwards slightly. Is your side window fitting tightly into the seal channel at the top (meaning at the roof)? The fit of the glass can be adjusted if this is the problem (bolts on the bottom of the door, I believe -but your dealer should know about this -and a good body shop can correct it). Do NOT think of selling the Jaguar because of this minor but annoying issue.

Perhaps the window isn't closing all the way? Try the window reset procedure in your Owner's Handbook.

I’ve had this since new, 22months. Will talk to dealer at coming service but am loath to have them fiddling. Perhaps bodyshop better option.

Anybody had success with eliminating the wind noise from the drivers window? I have a silent car except the drivers window wind noise that starts about 80mph. I have a feeling that it should be more silent...

If you hear wind noise on one side but not the other, you need to isolate the source.

Possible causes have been stated, already:

Improper/insufficient closure (adjust full-up position).
I believe that there are 'stopper' adjustments possible, inward/outward or angle at the top, but be careful: SEARCH for topics on scratched side glass.
Compare the glass movement on both sides.

Damaged/loose seal(s) on one side. This is a visual.

REPORT BACK

I believe there have also been reports of wind noise from the side mirror.

If that is the case, JUST DON'T LISTEN.; <<sorry>>

You won't be able to do anything, except fold the mirrors IN as a diagnostic, to see if the noise changes. At 80 MPH...

You need to find out exactly where the noise is coming from. I've got wind noise from the passenger side above 75 or so: not much but it's there. I had a passenger pinpoint it and it's at the topmost point in the curvature of the glass. For that, I believe the adjustment is at the bottom of the door, behind the panel. That should bring the top of the glass inward a mm or two. I haven't yet attempted it but it's on my list of low-priority tasks.

Thanks, sounds like a plan. I will have to try the passenger side too to be sure!

When its dark have someone on the outside shine a light along the top edge of the window while sitting inside and see if you can locate the gap then mark the location. It's going to be very small so look carefully or if you have presbyopia take a photo or video on your phone and magnify after. Like @sov211 recommends, place some blue painters tape just in that spot and seal it off by pressing all edges in several times then go for a drive. If that eliminates the noise then pull the trim to have it extend downward a bit more and see if you can eliminate the gap somehow. It will require an hour or two of dedicated work to do but will feel so good to fix the problem DIY style.

@Miauuu I also agree with @sov211 - please don't sell your F-Type because of this (especially as it has natural antidepressant effects ). In my case I was not happy with the overrun during manual shifting above 4K until VAP provided me with a tune to solve it. Dysphoria gone!

I want to see the video of someone entering the driver's seat with the top up, and the driver's window glass taped on the outside, LOL

An alternate strategy might be to apply Vaseline or a synthetic grease on the D-S seals, then roll up the windows. (Not to eliminate the noise, but to identify where the noise is coming from)
THEN go for a drive!

Haha @Carbuff2 good point - need a helper for the light and tape (unless you are a yoga enthusiast!). I like the silicon grease idea and no helper required.

I have investigated this a bit, and the driver window has a horizontal wobble. The passenger one is rock solid. I guess this might be from closing the car by the window from previous owners. Hopefully this can be tightened and will solve it.

Are you sure it’s closing all the way? Try raising the window, by holding the switch in the up position, until it’s all the way up. Then release the switch, and hold it up again. See if that makes any difference, that’s part of the sequence to reset the auto-up feature.

yes it does, and I have also performed the window reset feature. But the window is loose no doubt.

This is a well known problem, pushing/pulling the window to close the door is a big no-no and will eventually cause a bolt/screw or two to work loose, there is a thread and/or post about it and the fix around here somewhere.
I often have to lecture/chastise my passengers NOT to even touch the window when closing the door, and I cringe every time I see a movie or TV show featuring a car with frameless windows where they invariably push/yank on the window to close the door.

Edit - here is the post with the solution:

Good stuff. I thought that this might be the reason too, but then figured that it shouldn't cause any more wind noise because when the window is closed the top of the glass sits firmly against the seals and doesn't wobble like when the door is open. It's definitely a good thing to tighten it anyway and it just may help.

I tightened mine a couple of months ago according to the info in that thread. Super easy job. I didn't have any wind noise but the glass was just a bit more wobbly than on the passenger side and the door therefore rattled a bit more when closing it.

Yeah I think you are right that it is probably not the cause, but it cant hurt anyway. Right now it is freezing cold, so it is very hard to investigate the wind because anytime I go near the glass I can feel the cold which "feels" like wind.
I have red that there is also an adjustment of the REAR glass but I am not sure how this is even a thing, I thought it is fixed.

Good news. I have tightened the window with the screw under door panel to +- match passenger door as a reference (slight play under pressure but tight) and I've also adjusted the door "U" latch on the body (cca minus 1-2 mm) to match the fit with the other door to. Went to speed and the noise is mostly gone, hurray! I would say now it is normal what would I expect from a GT-ish sports car. I have plans to renew the rubber seals with some oil and then call it a day.
