Just did my 2nd DIY oil change yesterday after the last 3 were done for free at the dealer. The first was done by me when I got the car years ago (the dealer told me the oil had just been changed - yeh right - NOT). Both times I was shocked at how "watery" and dirty the oil was after only 3,000 miles. I don't know what kind of 0W-20 oil they use at the dealer but it ain't makin' it. The engine was pretty noisy before the oil change which I attributed as normal. I sent it in to Blackstone to see what's up.
with hot weather approaching. This is the original JLR spec oil for the engine years ago. I can't believe how quiet the engine is now. You may want to try that and see if things quiet down.
According to the gauge, the oil level is OK.
I changed about 6.4 liters at 69,000 km.
I've been hearing the noise for a while, but now that the hood is up, it's easier to hear it.
I read something about the compressor and the coupler. Could that be the cause?
100% that is the famous SC Snout rattle on shut down.
If you absolutely want to be sure it's real easy to remove the SC belt and then start and stop the engine and note the change in noises.
My 2014 XJR has made that sound for the last 30K miles or so. It's a known problem and should be changed out. But it is one of those things that really does not cause further problems. The longer you leave it go the more likely you will have the spring wear on the steel shaft. You have two choices. Go to the solid coupler and there are plus's and minus's with that. Or replace with a factory updated spring coupler.
Here is one with a lot of wear.
I have a complete Jaguar snout waiting to go on because I have waited so long. I am sure the shaft is damaged at this point in time.

I think we are all in the same boat with the scored shaft and some shutdown noise. I will do mine when I change the coolant pipes to aluminum in the next few months.
Have there been any reports of sudden SC failure from this coupler? I haven't found any so it's essentially an elective repair.
The SC oil can be changed using a syringe and thin plastic tubing. There is much doubt that the full 150 mL was ever put in at the factory because I have never gotten more than 50 mL out with a lot of manipulation. Some threads have the SC being opened up and the most they got out was less than 100 mL.
