You might also have a faulty HDD with bad sectors.
You might need to buy a 4.3 GB or larger HDD and install the software to get it up and running again.
I keep several HDDs ready in case the Windows 98 system 'crashes'.

Well I have replaced the 3V battery on the main board which now shows 3.15V.
I have built up a replacement main battery that now reads 9.9V when fully charged.
Put it all back together.
Pressed the green on button & all get is the first green LED light up to say it's on, the fourth green LED to say an external power source is connected (dock station) & a flashing fifth red LED.
It beeps when you press the green button & that's it, nothing else happens.
Infact I can't get the power on LED to go off & have to disconnect the battery.
Anybody got any idea's?
Also is there a user manual I can get from anywhere for it!
This may help other's.
3V battery is a custom jobbie so to replace it get a new CR2450 & a holder like below.
It fits into two of the holes but you need to bridge to the 3rd.
& if you want to replace old main batteries with more powerful top branded ones on the cheap look for the correct 9.6V 4500mah laptop battery on eBay etc.
This one cost me 8 pounds total & was perfect.

Nice try...
unfortunately the symptoms make me think you have a busted unit... especially if you found water in it...
i.e. I can see some dirt around those smd diodes near the battery in the first picture...
I would try to clean the board thoroughly with a toothbrush and some thinner (alcohol or gasoline).
Then you can search for shorted regulators, diodes etc with a multimeter... but if the water has reached the underneath of the cpu, chipset, memmory chips... you will probably need "re-balling" with is rather expensive and may not work...
You can put the unit back in the docking station and use something like that to see what chip seems to have the problem...

How many times it beeps? that is the scheme? is it something like "BEEEEEEEP bep bep bep" or " BEEEEEP BEEEEEP BEEEEEP......"

Posting / Hosting CD images
An easy way to share the cd images is to put them on a file-host such as rapidgator.
I have also plenty of space on my dedicated server, so If you guys want, you can upload your images to the links I will give you and then I can either post them as http links or create a nice torrent, or both...
anyone interested in sharing, drop me an email at pancyber<at>yahoo.com
I will reply with an ftp account for uploading.
I will post all the links in this thread unless you ask me not to.

Thanks pancyber
It's a single short "beep", one that you would expect it to do when powering up not an error one.
Other things I tried was I connected up a monitor to see if the screen was dead, nothing!
I am going to test the hard drive but I agree with you something has gone on the boards somewhere I think, just got to find it as I looked them all over & nothing stands out. Out with the volt meter lol

That beep is a good sign... at least it's processor works. Can you say if the lcd back light turns on (with screen still black) or it stays off? That would be a second good sign.
At your case maybe "reflowing" the motherboard and re-balling the BGA chips might fix your unit. Note that "interface thingies" that "talk" with your car, use car's power thus they cannot be troubleshooted.
I can recommend an excellent technician for the re-balling (he does not charge for testing) but he is in Greece and you'll have to pay for the shipping back and forth...

Thanks again pancyber
I won't have time to look at it again for over a week.
The display appears dead completely but I didn't check it very closly so can't say yet if indeed it was 100% dead.
I can do the reflowing myself & circuit repairs.
However I have not got the gear to do re-balling correctly.
Many companies in the U.K can do it so it is no problem if I go that route.
I guy in Greece sent me a very rare ECU to repair last year & that cost 40 pounds each way with DHL so sending it to Greece is not an option for me but thanks for the info.

Thank you Motorcarman and xjrguy for your help,
I down loaded and burn the CDs. Prior to installing them, my WDS started working again. All the PTU LED are on and I see the hard drive LED flashing indicating activity.
I read codes and cleared them and shut the system down.
When I tried to restart the WDS, i can see the Windows 98 screen but it starts to fade and I get lines across the screen. Is my harddrive crashing?
Thanks again for your help.

it sounds like you have a faulty display driver chip that can be fixed with re-balling. Try to boot in "Safe Mode" using an external keyboard and pressing F8 just before the "Loading Windows 98" screen appears. This won't fix it, just verify my diagnosis.

I keep several HDDs loaded with software to verify that a drive failure it not my problem if things like this happen.
Bad drives or worn old drives (all these IDE drives are getting old) can cause problems.
It is the fastest thing to try. Swapping a HDD only takes a few minutes.

While in "Safe Mode" you can try to scan the hard disk for errors (using widows chkdsk tool) to verify hard disk condition.

FORD WDS Iso Images
... After public demand, and mechanic1972 's priceless contribution,
a collection of FORD WDS cd iso images is in place....
A-6 340 MB
B-43.iso 549 MB
C5-1.iso 444 MB
C5-2.iso 441 MB
Furthermore, motorcarman has generously contributed these iso cd images:
B-44a.iso 616 MB
B-45.iso 612 MB
B-45upd.iso 8.5 MB
These, of course, are provided "as-it-is", no warranties and no questions asked... But they are fully tested.
Don't forget to use a "burn image" tool - don't just burn a compilation with the .iso file in it - this won't work.
ImgBurn is a good tool to use.
English and German directions for installing / upgrading / updating the GDS3500 can be found here.
All thanks should go to those two guys... I am just hosting the files.
We are still looking for someone to contribute the JAGUAR images.
***an administrator should make this post "sticky"
