Default Buying Advice

Have decided on 2000-2015 XKR, but have questions. Many questions. Looking for a convertible.

What years did model improvements occur?

Is there a particular model that will hold its value better long term (assuming well maintained?). Ie is the 2006 victory model more valuable?

What years are most reliable? I’m not a mechanic or inclined. What are the most common problems (ie tensioners, water pumps, etc). What are the most important things to look for when buying one?

thanks in advance

Hello,
"Value" means different things to different people.

If you mean, Which model can you resell for the most money then in that case Value is what someone else is willing to pay for it. And that is dictated by the most subtle things sometimes, like someone will absolutely fall in Love with the glove box latch or some similar meaningless detail, and will pay premium to get the car with that item.

Someone will be along shortly to direct you to the correct section where you can find answers to your questions.

Welcome to the forums CollingwoodGuy,

If you are not mechanically inclined, any Jaguar is going to cost a lot to maintain properly.

Your date range covers two entirely different models. The 1996-2005 steel bodied X100 (XK8) and the 2006-2014 aluminium bodied X150 (XK) and there were many changes throughout the production cycles of both models. Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/ to the XK8/XKR forum and this one https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk-xkr-x150-33/ to the XK/XKR forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' threads at the top of each are a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Your IP Address suggests you are in Florida and not the location given during registration. If so, you can also use the US Lower Atlantic Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/u...r-atlantic-66/ to find other members in your region.

Please read the guidance for new members ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...ned-up-241802/ ) which answers many of the most frequent questions about getting started.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Thanks this is helpful. I’m in Florida now, but live in Canada. Looking for a convertible to have in the winters down here. I’m good with the cost of maintenance, Just trying to avoid the big problems as much as possible.

Thanks for confirming the location anomoly.

Any used Jaguar needs a full service history preferably backed up with a fat file of invoices for work and parts. Unless you are looking at a high mileage example of any of your chosen year range, scheduled servicing will have been on a 'time' basis and this means every 12 Months. Treat any gaps with suspicion.

The FAQ's I advised in my first reply will soon tell you the regular issues (e.g. plastic tensioners on early XK8/XKR and Nikasil cylinder bore coating). If you are seeking to reduce possible issues then the end-of-production Victory Edition XKR would be the best choice in X100. The later X150 was absolutely right at introduction and the early 4.2 examples have proved more robust than the later 5.0 litre versions. All this being said, treatment and care by PO's is the most important factor. A caring and careful owner will have an immaculate and reliable 1996 X100 but a careless and neglectful owner can wreck a 2014 X150 in a very short time. Vet the owner as well as the vehicle!

Two excellent books cover these models:

The Essential Buyer's Guide - Jaguar XK8 & XKR 1996-2005 (ISBN 978-1-845843-59-5)
The Essential Buyer's Guide - Jaguar New XK 2005-2014 (ISBN 978-1-845848-06-4)

Both written by marque expert Nigel Thorley and published by Veloce, they are in-depth guides to strengths and weaknesses together with available options.

Welcome and good luck in your hunt. You might check the X100 and X150 forums for additional guidance.
As others mentioned, a documented service/maintenance record and a good pre-purchase inspection are recommended for any car you consider.
If you can't afford a good one, you really can't afford a bad one. Spend the money up front.
I found the New XK book mentioned by Graham very informative during my X150 search. I've attached an XKR buyers guide for the 4.2L X150 that may also be helpful.
Best in the New Year.
