Hello from Snowy NE USA
Hello all, from chilly New England USA.
I am a restaurant server *** auto technician among many other cool, fun things. My first foray into mechanics and myself and my teen's daily drivers are Subaru and Volvo, but I have a dear friend (bless them, they're surely off their rocker) who has decided to trust me messing around with a 2016 XJ L Portfolio, aka Fancy Car.
Currently what we've got going on are codes P2187 and P2189 (system too lean at idle on banks 1 and 2), and something up with the drivers door and/or maybe the battery. Oh yes, and two key fobs in various states of disrepair. Apparently one was sent through the wash and the other fell in a puddle? Regardless one seems completely trashed. (I will post more specific questions in the appropriate subforums).
Anyway, when I say I'm a mechanic I mean, I completed a 3 mo course in December and am currently looking for an entry level scut job. Not to be egotistical, but egotistically, I am decently good at scut, and I'm a fairly quick study at the harder stuff. HOWEVER, I am utter ***** at knowing what things are called, where they're located and what they do. Mostly because I'm a woman raised in the USA; we are taught to be docile and helpless, I am fundamentally not supposed to know anything about cars. But I am good at asking questions, which is probably the most important part of learning. And **** what I am *supposed* to do, which is the second most important thing.
So anyway. Prepare to be utterly infuriated by my pedantic questions. And hopefully, eventually, impressed by what some ditsy chick can do.

Welcome! As a former mechanic, in a previous life, I wish you luck. It's another tough and thankless job that most people take for granted.
No offense (really), but some of the best, and worst, mechanics I've ever worked with have been women. I could sort of say the same of the men I've worked with, but some of the women have impressed me with their "I have to be even better at this to prove that I can do it" attitude and ethic. Some were really good and some were just full of hot air. Again, I wish you the best.

Hello,
In my experience, it's best Not to set out to "impress" anyone (that only puts a target on my back), just keep my head down and mouth shut (unless something is Clearly wrong or dangerous) and do my work, which speaks for itself. There will Always be some Bozo, (in Any profession or work environment) putting 'trip hazards' in front of you, just to see how you react; mostly because they're Jerks, more than a little bit jealous/threatened/insecure and lack class.
In these forums, however, You will be treated with Respect First!
Your questions will be answered by some of the very best Jaguar minds on the planet; you have only to ask, and be patient (that's hard for me sometimes) until members understand what you're really asking. Posting pictures of the component in question helps quite a lot in this.
Enjoy your time here. You'll learn Loads.
