Jag XJC - Upgraded running gear or matching numbers?
Hi,
I'm brand new to this forum so thanks for having me and thanks in advance for your replies.
I'm a big Jaguar fan. I'm just coming to the end of the complete restoration of a 1967 series 1 E-Type roadster in opalescent gold on light tan but it's my new project which I'd appreciate your advice on.
I have a '78 series 2 Daimler Double Six coupe. It's essentially the same as the series 2 Jaguar XJ12 couple bar some chrome and badge differences. It's in need of a full restoration and I have the option of rebuilding the original v12 fuel injection engine and BW 3-speed gearbox OR fitting the car with a later V12 HE engine and four speed gearbox from an XJ-S (which was built on the same platform as the XJ coupe).
Do I stick to the original, less efficient and less reliable engine and gear box or upgrade? Bear in mind that sticking with the original engine and gearbox is the more expensive option (since I have access to decent XJS running gear already). Originality and unreliability over improved performance and cost saving? What do you think?

UM,as made for me.
Reliability is controlled by the "nut behind the wheel" in my opinion. NO offence, just Aussie talk for YOU, the owner.
Our 1976 XJ12 Fuel Infected Pre HE, has now just clocked 650000kms, and still redlines with the greatest of ease, and sits at 5000rpm hour after hour when we take it shopping.run Interstate.
2nd BW12 installed at 340000kms, Son borrows thw car, and came home with 2nd gear AWOL, never asked again.
Apart from standard servicing, it starts on demand, stops only when the key is turned OFF, goes forward in "D", and backwards in"R", what more could you want.
Welcome to the Forum, by the way, WELL DONE on the E.

Welcome to the forums adebnam,
It's a simple choice between current spend and future value. The coupes are the XJ that will increase in value and the Daimler Double Six is the most desireable BUT originality is essential. Non matching numbers and the value tumbles.
Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...s-i-ii-iii-16/ to the XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

650kms?! Wow. I doubt there are more than a handful which have done over 200kms. Great work and thanks for the advice. Original is my preference but I wanted to know I was making the right decision.
