Question Looking For A Collector, Help Please

Looking for some help where to go next. My mom and dad have a Jaguar and to be honest I know ZERO about it other than it looks like the 1986/87 XJ6, i can clarify more once I get get going down a path. They are both elderly, my dad has since passed, and the the car has been sitting in the garage having not been moved since it was parked more than likely over 10-15yrs ago. The car looks in rough shape, paint faded, leather seats wearing to the touch, tires flattened and dry rotted, alot of problems i would think and alot of money for someone to restore to good working condition to be valuable to them.

With that being said, I do know there are people whom like to tinker and restore, is this the right place to find someone or where do i need to go? My mother hadnt seen the car for years and when i told her how bad shape the car is in and probably not of much value, she shuttered at the idea of me sending it to the junk yard believing it has some sort of value strictly due to the brand. Is she right? She is a 60s dreamer and believes everything has value as it ages and is an investment, i dont know and frankly do not care, i want the thing gone out of her garage as well as she does, however i am doing her the honor of reaching out to see if there is someone whom wants to take on a new challenge.

Please let me know where i need to reach out to if this is not the place. We live in the Decatur Illinois area.

Thanks!

Yes this is the right place. Thanks for posting your location as you ideally want to find someone local so they can come over and look at the car.
Now you don't have any detailed car info yet so we can't answer your questions.

Here is what to do. Get some pictures of the car and post to this forum to see what model Jaguar you have. There is a requirement of making I think 10 posts before your allowed to post pictures but that should be easy to do. Do you have a title and can you read the year and model off that? If no title then hopefully you can just give the car away to someone on the forum who is a fan of that model.

No Jaguars are not automatically valuable collector cars. As always it just depends BUT with the condition the car as you describe it it's pretty much junk at this point. But I like your idea of saving it from the junk yard too!

Hello,
Yes, as mentioned above, Pictures will be critical to establishing exactly what Jaguar you have.
I wish you success finding it a new home.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

I would suggest to contact the nearest Jaguar owners club (probably Jaguar Association of Greater Saint Louis). I bet you could get one of their experts to come out, inspect the car and give you an honest assessment of what the car is worth. Probably even make you an offer for it or at least put you in touch with someone who would restore it. You are right, it would likely cost a lot more than its worth to put it back on the road, but that doesn't necessarily mean that its ready for the scrap heap. Many of us are dumb enough to waste money on them as a "hobby" because we enjoy it. Its not much different than wasting money on golf, fishing, cruise ships, international travel, etc except that when they're done, all they have is memories and perhaps a few photographs to bore their friends and relatives with. We have memories, photos AND a beautiful, restored classic car that we can continue to enjoy in perpetuity (or at least until we start the next project).

Sounds like mom might enjoy seeing it brought back to life. The hottest videos on youtube for us gearheads right now are the "barn-finds". If you'll let someone film it, they might come out and actually help. They'll film the whole process from opening up the garage door, unloading all the crap that's piled up around and on top of the car, air up the tires, free up the brakes, roll it out into the sunshine, check out the motor to make sure its not seized, then hook up a portable fuel supply and try to start the motor for the first time in decades. If it will run, then there's a lot better chance that you could find someone to save it. The local Jaguar club might be able to hook you up with somebody like that.
