Default Potential Lump Owner

Hey all!
I don't have a Jag yet but I hope too soon! Or at least a Lump if you don't wanna call it a Jag. The specimen in question is an '82 xjs with a chevy 350 TPI and a 700R tranny and a Jaguar rear end. Its in great condition and a great price with low mileage on the engine. I plan to use it as a daily driver and try to restore its exterior glory whenever possible, but somewhat of a concern to me is the fuel economy. I have heard that a car like this can get in the vicinity of 20 mpg. That would be fantastic especially since my '95 mustang 3.8 could hardly pull that off. Can any Lump owners confirm this mileage estimate? Any recommendations/warnings/advice for a potential new Jag/Lump owner?
Thanks guys and gals! I hope to be part of the community!
-Dom

Welcome to the forum Dom,

Sorry, I've no idea what mileage your lump should produce.

I have an xjs with a 4.3 chevy v6 with 700R4 trans. It's the same thing as the 350 but missing 2 middle cylinders (literally takes all 350 parts) I get around 24mpg maybe a little better and it needs a tune up. Very cheap to maintain and has some of the most beautiful lines ever put on a car.some purists may be mad but I think it's the best way to go. I'm doing a 350 swap someday since it bolts right into place haha

I'd say 20 mpg/highway...maybe more... should be doable if the engine is running right and you keep your foot out of it. I seriously doubt that you'd get 20mpg in city driving....there's just too much weight.... and all bets are off if you put your boot into it.

The same car with a properly running V12 will do about 12-13/city and 19-22/highway. The 350TPI ought to do as well.

Cheers

Much thanks for the warm welcome everybody! It looks like I'll be buying this beast sometime this week so I'll be posting pics and info probably
Thanks for the info guys! The 20 mpg I imagined being a solid mix of city and highway? I hope it doesn't do as awful as the v12 around town but we'll see... Its definitely a beautiful car and I think I left a piece of me in it when I test drove it so I'll be needing to get that back

you'll love it, the 4.3 i have in mine is more or less a 350 -2cyl, you should see 20mpg no problem especially if its tpi. its the cheap parts and reliability of a chevy engine with the styling of a jag! literally the best of both worlds!

Browse some Camaro/Firebird forums and see what MPGs those guys are getting with a late 80s/early 90s 350TPI engine. Your results should be about the same

Yeah, basically the same....but the extra *90* cubic inches of the 350 just might have a little influence on fuel economoy :-)
