Default Codes

I have 2 codes (1647- O2 control chip-bank 2 & 1111- ECM Drive cycle) showing up after my check engine light came on in my 2004 S-type. It doesn't seem to drive any differently and am wondering if it will hurt to drive it short distances until repaired? Also what parts and repair will cost? Any advice appreciated! Thanks.

Can't tell you about the P1647, but the P1111 can be ignored. Ironically, it means that all modules have reported in.

You will always see one of these two codes:

P1000 : onboard checks not completed since last memory clear
P1111 : onboard checks completed

As for the other code you've found:

P1647 : HO2 sensor control malfunction - bank 2 upstream

The possible causes are:

1. HO2 sensor 2/1 heater failure
2. HO2 sensing circuit -short to ground, high voltage, open circuit or high resistance
3. ECM failure

You can discount (3) as you wouldn't be driving anywhere!

The effect of (1) and (2) is on emissions monitoring. You may run a little rich or a little weak and push more CO out of the tailpipe. Nothing catastrophic.

I'd clear the codes and run it for a while before checking again. Quite often sensor faults don't recur.

P1647 - Change out the O2 sensor (driver's side O2 sensor right in front of cat converter) www.rockauto.com has good prices and don't forget the 5% off discount code and clear codes.

P1111 - is normal as stated above.

If you don't change the O2 the car will estimate the fuelling, erring on the rich side, and (probably slowly) burn out the catalytic convertor.

You can change the O2 sensor but I would the clear codes first. Make sure it comes back and is the same sensor.

Then before buying anything swap the O2 sensor from side to side. The fault code should follow the sensor.
