Default Gearbox fault when in reverse ?

Hello everyone, I posted a thread months ago on where I would get a gearbox fault code after car washes...turns out it isn't that.

When I start the car and put it in reverse sometimes the gearbox fault light comes on and goes into limp mode...I shut off the car & turn it back on and the fault lights goes away it only does it in reverse...It likes to do it too when the car is parked in hill and I'm reversing.

Anyone have an idea why it does this ?

Thanks

Should have some codes. See if you can get them.

You may want to check your shifter cable adjustment.

The dealer is probably needed to get the gear box fault codes.

The two small 8mm bolts should be checked. They bolt to the side of the transmission and hold the shift cable in position. Every S Type I have checked, these bolts have been loose. Be gentle because they are small. I used a dab of blue Loctite as a backup. Bolts are on the driver’s side and you need the car in the air to check them.

Several people have had these bolts fall out completely too.

Have you checked the fluid level?

I'll take a look this weekend once she's in the air...I'm going to be doing a trans fluid/pan change this Saturday...just waiting on some tools to arrive so I can get on it.

Every time I have the car up on ramps I make sure I remember to crawl underneath with my 8mm box wrench and snug up those two shift cable bolts. Takes about 60 seconds tops and well worth the effort. If you go years without tightening them, they will eventually bite you....

How did you check the level (in detail)?

And we need your car details!

Welcome drew2222,

You really need to give us the vehicle details, year, engine, etc.

Then you need to post an intro in the new members section.

Hello, The problem went away with changing the transmission fluid/pan/sleeve on my s-type...I checked to see if the transmission shift cable was loose before changing fluid/pan and it was pretty tight. So I proceeded with the fluid change...and never had the problem again.

You got a new transmission and the problem is still there??

I think I would want my money back.

You need to understand that without codes you have little to no chance of getting a solution. The OBD II system was mandated with error codes so you could troubleshoot the system.

It's just too complex to guess at an answer.
