Default I Give Up! Ashtray cover & Console

Rearview mirror leaked onto Ashtray cover and splattered onto console.

I have tried everywhere I know without success - including some sources I've found on this forum, to find replacements at a reasonable price.

I had the ashtray cover sanded down so it could be painted but it was pitted so badly by the caustic liquid in the mirror, it cannot be made to look acceptable.

The console is stained worse adjacent to the ashtray area but it is also stained in other locations. Fortunately the liquid did not hurt the arrea around the shifter. I believe my only choice for the console is to try to replace it - unless someone has a better idea?? I would only need to replace the upper part of the console.

Anyone know where I can find replacements and/or any ideas? The interior was in perfect condition before the mirror leaked.

ALSO, ... I had the glass in the mirror replaced but the auto-dim feature does not work???

Pictures included. Pic of interior is prior to the mirror leak. My mirror has the compass in it and also the rain sensor. I could care less about the rain sensor but I do want the auto-dim.

The car is a 2000 S-Type 4.0.

Thanks in advance for your help.

A few things come to mind...
e-bay of course, I don't see any advertised, but you can e-mail those parting out cars and ask if they have 1.
2. You can shoot it with "sanding primer" (thats what I learned to call it), its a mix of paint primer and a very fine "filling material".
Spray, sand, spray, sand, etc, to a glassy smooth surface, then paint.
It fills minor nicks and pitting quite well.

I have a 2000 S-Type too, but I don't have that style mirror mount.
I accidently bought that kind of mirror in an attempt to replace mine.
I have the entire assembly, w/ compass and bulbous cup housing, PM me for details.

The auto-dim is electronic ("electochromic" aka "electrochromatic") using the fluid that leaked out. Often called "dragon's blood".
Probably because it eats into what it drips on.

ASHTRAY LID is available from the dealer but the trim code is required. (several different colors) XR853090XXX is the part number. XXX is translated as AGM,SDZ,NED,LGM and LEG.

I checked and I'm sorry I don't have it. But I can point you to a wrecking yard who has it here or we can work something out to pick it up and ship it to you

Thumbs up ****** update ******

Because of this forum, it looks like I've got my problems solved - with the help of some great guys!

* DittoGlen has a mirror in transit to me. Quite a coincidence on this one. He had purchased it earlier but did not work in his S-Type. However, it is exactly the mirror I needed. We are both praying that it works!

* Mafioso was willing to take his time to go to a local salvage yard to pick up the ashtray lid for me and ship it to me.

* Motorcar man gave me a heads up on the part number and color code.

* and, Jagv8 gave us a name for the juice that comes out of the mirror; "Dragons Blood" Aptly named! I wish you could see how the stuff ate up the surface of the ashtray lid!!

Fortunately I found a console with the ashtray lid included on Ebay with the correct color code (AGM - almond). The shipper thinks it will clean up good - I'm keeping my fingers crossed. You can see it here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123

Thanks again for everyone's help. This is a great forum and I'm proud to be a part of it.

I can take no credit - I got "dragon's blood" from another car site (yep, they had similar rear view mirrors). Thanks, though.

I did not know you could change or top up the fluid in the mirror? Anybody done this? Did it fix the mirror?

Can anyone tell me what years and models this stuff is in? Also, is it included or excluded by any particular feature or option?

All those with electrochromatic mirrors (rear view and/or door mirrors) have this, and many cars besides those from jag (mirrors are from Magna Donnelly IIRC).

I never heard before that it can be topped up so more details please....

Yes they are user servicable, messy and a serious PITA since the 2 electrochromatic plates have to be seperated and fluid trapped between the panes.
