Navigation Feature I Never Knew I Had!
I was really low on gas. Never had the car so low. Made it home from the airport and figured I get gas the next morning. As I'm leaving the house the navigation screen has a message stating I'm low on fuel and the Nav will display the closest gas stations. Sure enough the map apeared with gas station symbols!
It sounds like you don't find the system in these cars all that useful? I don't expect it to plan my vacation for me and I will always carry maps.
Is it an update or functionality issue?
I don't have any GPS right now and though I can't quite figure how I seem to survive with out it I still do. So it's not a deal breaker on the car for me. It's not that I don't thinks it's potentially useful I just haven't felt compelled to have one. So is the Jag system just not good enough and you need to get an external unit if you want full functionality?
Something that would alert and route me around traffic congestion would be great but do any of these systems actually function that way worth a damn?
Thanks.

The jag (navteq) in-built doesn't do the latter.
I never felt the need either so don't care that mine's out of date. I use it. Occasionally.
But I rarely hit congestion so am not the target customer for a modern unit.

Yeah I didn't expect that the Jag's unit did that. I think Acura has adverstised that sort of function in the past.
I'm wondering if those sort of systems actually function prioperly or if it's all still bleeding edge of technology stuff.
I'm aslo wondering if the Jag's unit is "good enough" but not stellar.

The Jag system was very highly regarded at launch and really was among the best available at the time. Sadly that time was 2002 and things have moved on. New standalone and integrated units are faster in processing, have higher resolutions screens, prettier graphics and some extra functionality. In terms of actual route finding and guidance however the Jaguar system is still very good, providing you have the latest maps.
I have a TomTom Live that uses the GSM network to get updates on traffic and also for google local search to find things. I've found it to be really very good, and it's saved me from massive traffic jams several times. It also knows the speed actual users average on a given road so can pick a route more accurately and give you better ETA times. Highly recommended if you want a standalone unit!

Also, I found out while poking through the menus on my facelift 2005 MY car that you can make it give you directions and instructions in the message centre under the speedo! Pretty cool, I thought.

One salesman was pointing out the language options and said he prefered the British option even though he was a Brooklyn native. Strangely, there aren't Brooklyn, Bronx or Jersey options available.
Boy, could one have fun with those options. Especially the hand gestures! ;>)
