Default Valet key only

When I got my car (2002 S-Type)) I only was given 2 valet keys. I called the Jag dealers and they told me I would not be able to get into the trunk which is not true.

The way I see it, it really doesn't matter as long as I don't press the valet button in the glove box. And if I did, I could not lock the glove box anyway so I will never lock myself out of the trunk having a valet key only.

The only thing I noticed is that if I open the trunk with the key if the doors are still locked, the alarm goes off.

So, this is not really a major issue right? I don't want to spend $400+ dollars on a key.

Thanks-

You can modify your valet key into a "real" key.

When I got my '02, I only got one key....the valet, along with a stand alone fob, programmed for the car (most likely by the dealership). Haven't messed with the glovebox valet deal anyway.

The standard keys for the pre-facelift S-Type also have the word VALET moulded into them, there are just stickers/decals with the Jaguar growler head that go over where the VALET is written. The plastic parts are produced in the same moulds so they all have them.

The standard keys are black, the valet keys are green.

If your keys are black then the decal/s has just come off, you actually have the standard keys.

The one original key for my old S-Type was exactly like this, black key with one of the logos missing, so it was showing the VALET marking.

I bought a genuine replacement standard key and Valet key, and then it became pretty obvious what had happened to the original key I already had.

EDIT

Here are the keys from my old S-Type, the black one on the right was the original and was missing the Growler on the other side, and it said VALET. But you can see from the tip of the key it was not a valet key.

The green key on the left is a genuine valet key.

Cambo, that describes mine...except all I have is one. LOL. And it's Not a true valet key, even though both sides say so...it's still a black key. BTW, I'd love to get a spare....but don't want to pay a fortune for one.

Just hope that the trunk release in the car keeps working. I have a 2003, with that one, once unlocked the button release on the outside opens the trunk, or boot.

Welcome to the forum.

Check the valet switch in the glove box. Sounds like it has been accidentally pressed in. When activated, the buttons on the dash and trunk lid are inhibited.

The BLUE sections are identical on both MASTER and VALET keys. The difference is the RED section is turned down on the MASTER:

That's why a VALET can be converted to a MASTER but a MASTER cannot be converted to a VALET key.

Info thanks to Graham

I can only reference my 6 cut key (pre 2002 I think have 8 cuts as shown above in the pics by Norri).

I used IDS to add a new fob (transponder and transmitter) and a valet style key (transponder only) to supplement the single key fob I received with my car.

The key fob (sourced from Ali Express for £12.86):
Yiqixin 4 Button Smart Flip Remote Car Key 315Mhz/433Mhz 4D60 Chip for Jaguar S-Type, XJ, XJR, XK FO21 Blade 2002 2003 2008

My car operates on 315Mhz as it's a Japanese spec Jaguar S-Type R. To change the frequency, hold down both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons at the same time and then press the BOOT / TRUNK button 5 times. You will know when you have the right frequency as the Jaguar SDD / IDS transmitter pairing process prompts you to press any button on the fob. If this does not work, then try changing the fob frequency and try again.

Video here - hope this helps others:

Just as a reminder. There is forum member "sone" that makes these tibbe keys and has blanks. He can make one from a photo. He did one for me and works perfect. I just needed the key shank so i swapped it out to my fob. No programming needed because the transponder is in the fob
