Battery is toast. Unable to hold charge.

check voltage, key off then check voltage headlights on, then check voltage when trying to start. minor drop with lights on, major drop with key to crank would suggest starter bad. //major drop with just head lights on would suggest battery. If starter indicated, try rapping it with a hammer a few times it might be stuck.

Yes, to Docs point. Battery first then take a hammer to starter if she still clicks with a known good or new battery.

Lots of things can happen in storage, however battery is always should be a suspect. See if you can find a known-good battery and try it with one.

If not, check all fuses. Also check for signs of vermin chewing on wires in the engine bay. Especially if you smell burning isolation or have unexplained multiple blown fuses.

Check coolant level - if lots of it missing, find out why. Also, if you feel ultra-motivated, remove spark plugs and try turning it over by hand. If you can't remove one belt at a time, until you find culprit. If all belts off, plugs out and it doesn't turn over - it is bad news bears. Squirt ATF into each cylinder and let it sit overnight.

As other pointed out, hammer can be used to persuade starter to get unstuck. However, expect it to not start again.

Battery was charged and load tested two times by different mechanic's and both times passed. Battery is only one season old less then 500 miles on it.

The miles are so low that unless the battery was on a suitable conditioner (not a traditional charger) it is suspect.

With LUCK you tried mechanics who actually grasp the needs of modern cars, but many do not and will wrongly pass a battery.

Just an update
Jag was sent to dealer by tow truck, when it got there they put the key in and it started
don't know why or how. they are running a diagnostic check to see if anything pops up
my only guess is that the starter sednoid might have hung up and the two loosened it up to engage.
Has anyone had this experience? I never got to swing the hammer but it probably would have worked. Thanks to everyone who had suggestions.

I had a bmw do that. Starter went out, I tried for an hour but nothing. Got it towed from 2 hours outside of town, and it started right up at the shop. A week later it happened again and I insisted they replace the starter that time. No trouble since.

Sometimes I think just the bouncing around from the tow loosens up the solenoid.
