I did, replacing the standard unit with a single DIN replacement is a lot easier than replacing the 'premium' system (speakers in A-pillars and parcel shelf).

Double DIN units are a lot harder, as they don't fit in the space behind the original unit with chopping and cutting at the car's structure.

I cheated and put a single DIN-chassis model with a double DIN display in mine, but they aren't cheap (and I needed an amplifier to replace the Jag unit in the boot).

It's a damn sight easier if you have the correct wiring diagrams for your car, the system changed from HK to Alpine, my 1998 electrical diagram was no use on my 2000 car.

The standard system has power and speaker output in one white plug, as it drives the speakers from its internal amp. The premium just has the power connectors as line out signals go through a yellow plug to the amp in the boot and then to the speakers.

Oddly enough the actual stereo unit has a standard/premium switch on the case, I guess to select output levels for an external or internal amp.

As suggested earlier more expert opinion than mine can be found using the search function.

Good "look".

I did this about a year ago. What made it work was the shallow depth of the Alpine iLX-007 head unit. Just the other day I bought the new iLX-107, which was just released. It introduces wireless CarPlay, which is very nice. The 107 chassis is quite different than the 007, but it's still more shallow than a comparable single din, so it fit right in. Wiring harness is (fortunately) the same so I was able to do a fairly easy swap.

Not sure how to link, but I'll try:

Edited to add for your amusement....you can install a startup bitmap on the Alpine, so here's what I did:

Went w/ Kenwood DPX501BT & Rockford Fosgate P165 6.5" speakers here & am very pleased. Professionally installed so I can't help w/ schematics.

I found it on ebay. It was a single din, but I had it modified professionally for double din height, and tilted slightly for a better angle. I think they used Lexan (?) to create the new shape. I don't know much about shaping plastic like that, which is why I had much of it done professionally.

BUMP

Good too see these in one thread. I have searched this subject tirelessly but it seems to be a complicated task. There are a few single din units out there that seem to have a period correct look.
check this out.

Also anyone ever try this unit? seems to be shallow enough.
