Default The lights are Off ... message 2005 4.2S

According to the handbook you would expect "The lights are off" message to only show when its dark enough to have the lights on.
Mine seems to show regardless of the amount of ambient light ... is it just encouraging daytime running lights?
Thank you
Ray

Sounds like a fault but see what others say.

Mine only displays when outside light is low. Could the sensor be dirty or covered by something/ or bad connection?

On my (UK specification) 2005 XK8 4.2-S with the autolights option, the message LIGHTS ARE OFF would appear if the rotary collar was set to OFF but the sensor determined the ambient light was low enough for the lights to have been switched ON if AUTO was selected.

It's simply there as a reminder because it's easy to forget to turn the lights ON if you're used to using AUTO and it's switched OFF.

If yours doesn't behave like this, suspect a faulty sensor.

Thank you for the replies ... presumably the sensor is on the front screen, behind the mirror ?

The sensor is located on the back of the mirror, not on the windscreen.

Just had a quick look at the back of the mirror .... the sensor appears to be set back, inside the mirror case ... in the dark as it were. I'll try to take a picture tomorrow.

Lightbulb Hey! Turn your Lights on.............

"Lights are Off" warning is to remind you to turn-on your Automatic Lights......It came on Today about 6:45PM here in Houston....and "yes" the little Light sensor is on the back of the Mirror.....Some people don't drive around with the Lights on "Automatic" all the time...Day before yesterday, the Warning came on and I turned over to Automatic and the Lights didn't come, as it was still to Light or Bright outside for the sensor to turn them on.....I was facing West.....Billy Clyde in Houston

I had a closer look today ... the sensor is secure, it seems to be slightly further back than an example found on the Internet ... when I get chance I'll try to test it with a flashlight.

Now Solved ... It was a faulty sensor in the rear view mirror.
It now works as it should ... with the switch in the auto position the lights only come on when the conditions call for it.
Thanks for your help

Did you replace just the sensor or the complete mirror ?

I sorry I can't say for certain, it was done under warranty along with two other jobs ... I was just told it was the sensor in the rear view mirror.
