Default fan replacement

The mechanic noticed that the fan is worn, brought the noise to my attention (I hear the fan run after the engine has turned off on occasions where I have run the air conditioning). I'm guessing it is a pretty straightforward fix but I am wondering if anyone can comment on this issue. Is it a good idea that I source the parts instead of them? He said that the part isn't common, and I perceived that to mean that it is not something a Jaguar dealer or a parts store has on the shelf ready to go.

depends on the year of XJ40 ,

pre 1993 the cars have a vicious fitting that binds on the shaft when it gets warm and spins the cooling fan

later cars have twin electric fans , each electric one can be individually replaced ,

so depends on your MY to be honest

viscous fans are fairly easy to replace, but finding a new one may be harder in your part of the world

here is a pic showing my electric fans in a my94 car during my head gasket replacement works , if it looks like this then you have electric fans ?

BB

post script , as you say the fan runs on it must be electric,

so the fan cassette undoes from the two top bolts , remove the x2 fan connector supplies and the cassette pull up and out, each fan can be replaced as needed, they should be silent running, no bearing noise at all , well , it is a Jaguar.....lol , i recently had to replace one of my fans when it went noisy all of a sudden, its the bearings, the fan is used in a wide range of Jaguars , X300 and XJ8 and XK8 ( possibly X-Type as well ) , with the same setup , electrical plugs are the same as well

Fantastic, BB! I think you should do the audio book of the Haynes Manual! I greatly appreciate the information! I'll need to look at my vehicle.

Surprisingly, I searched and used ones are relatively reasonably price, and new ones are available at between $750 and $1000 US (approx 525 GBP / 750 GBP.) New ones are probably pointless related to the car's market value. Fortunately, I also have a good friend in the UK who can forward items to me.

It seems like the were a lot of modifications made during 1993/1994, and I am guessing running changes during production in preparation to have the X300 perfect on introduction.

It's quite the learning experience, and as much as I have been interested in cars / mechanical knowledge, I never pursued it or had any guidance. This vehicle has given me great motivation to learn!

Yes...I took a good look, and the fan unit DOES look like the electric unit in your '94. .Again, thanks for your assistance!

Hi Phil,

It is helpful to others (and saves their time in responding to your questions) if you will go to your Control Panel and edit your signature to include the year, model and engine of your Jaguar.

Just to confirm Brake buster's advice, when one of the electric fans failed in our '93, I replaced it with a fan from an X308, but if I recall correctly, I did have to change or modify the electrical connector, so there may be a difference between the fan connectors in '93 and '94 or mid-'94 and later cars.

Cheers,

Don

Normal for fans to run after shutdown when using a/c

As I shop for used parts on this, should I be concerned about mileage of the donor car? If my part is failing at 100,000 miles, should I not be concerned about wear on a part with 150,000?

Thanks for adding your car info, Phil!

If you can find lower-mileage parts, that's certainly a plus. At this point it may not be easy to find parts with fewer miles than your car has done. The good news is that used fans don't bring a lot of money and they're pretty easy to replace, so if you buy one and it fails in a couple of years, it's not the end of the world.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks, Don! I needed that bit of encouragement.
