All, my 2004.5 X-Type Sport was rear ended by some low life who hit it & ran as it was parked in front of our home. The body shop needed 4 weeks to repair it. I have a question about what happens when the remote trunk button is depressed. I used to think the trunk/boot popped open. Mine doesn't move. It clicks & unlocks, but I have to lift the trunk/boot lid to open it. I see two plastic spring assemblies that are next to either hydraulic piston (I can't think of the proper name), but they don't seem to do anything. My memory is fried & my rental cars had trunk lids that pop open, but what about my cat?

My question to anyone with an X-type is, does the lid pop open or do you have to lift it? I feel a little resistance. It's not surprising considering the trunk lid was pushed into the car. Do the plastic things with springs serve any purpose?

When my 2002 X Type boot unlocks, it does not pop up - I have to lift it, but there is no resistance.

I have only had my Jag for about 1 month so maybe it should pop up and I am not "Jagaware" enough to know....

 

No, the trunk* does not pop up when the trunk is opened, you must manually lift it after it is unlatched. It barely rises up until you lift it, as to appear still latched.

i believe it is a security item, and a very good one at that. Since you can also open the trunk from inside the car, your view of who may be removing items from your trunk would be impaired if the trunk lid was raised.

(imagine pulling up to the airport to unload a passenger, pushing the trunk-open button, having it lift all the way open, and when you get out of the car and walk to the rear to unload the luggage, the luggage is gone!)

The little plastic spring-loaded thingies provide just enough tension to keep anything from rattling when driving down the road. The design of the hinges is such, when the lid is closed they could possibly yiggle and yump just a bit without them. If you study the angles and dangles of that hinge, it becomes apparent it is strongest when the lid is open, not when it is closed.

Those photos of the damage made me want to cry. It is too bad you must park on the street. I hope your repairs bring all back to "like new" condition.


* I am thinking of keeping a boot in my trunk, just to remind me of the "proper" term.

 

Bruce, beyond the button on the key fob, does your car have an internal trunk release button? And if so, where is it?

Tony, the "springy thingies" are called "Poppers". They are only meant to lift the trunk lid about an inch to keep it from re-latching. By no means will it open the trunk lid fully. My car lost the poppers a long time ago and I never really saw a need for them, so, I never replaced them.

 

Most British cars seem to do this, I think it has something to do with all the rain they get over there....

The internal boot release is located next to the locking devise it usually has a glow in the
Dark handle attached to a cord/ wire. Some cars loose the plastic handle and the cord retracts
Into the plastic cover.

Hey everyone,
The body shop replaced the poppers & the struts. The trunk lid now moves up about a 1/4" and it is easily raised once the trunk is unlocked. I think they also had to do some body shop magic as the trunk lid was repainted. It all looks good.

One thing they had to do was remove the chrome 3.0 badges on the rear of the car & haven't replaced them as new ones haven't arrived. Being I drive an X-Type Sport model, I don't care for any chrome. The body shop said they could leave the chrome 3.0 off or if I want to 'pimp my ride', they have a pin striper guy who could fill in the rear Jaguar letters with white pin striping. I figured I'd ask the forum & get other's opinions.

Hertz, so, you are wanting something like this?



I did it myself using a standard chrome piece and then I filled in the lettering with Elmer's White Glue. Once the glue dries, you can paint the whole piece (recommend scuffing it up before hand and then using some adhesion promoter too). With the color still wet, you can pluck the dried glue out of the lettering. Once the paint is dry, you clear the whole thing and you are done. You don't like how the glue set up. Pluck the glue out and try it again. Very easy to do. The hardest part is keeping the piece level as the glue is drying as you want to put as much glue as you dare into the lettering to give yourself something to grab on to when it comes time to pull the glue out.

Thanks! That's exactly what the body shop wants to do, except they'll do white pin striping in the JAGUAR letters. I don't care for chrome which was the reason I went with a sport model.

Nice repair job Backhertz , the bodyshop you used need a big " Congrats ". Looks like they take pride in their work . I'm a carspray painter from way back ..only cellulose in those days..

 

My key fob unlocks and releases the boot lid. I have to manually pull it up. No resistance. Good luck on your repairs and hopefully the person who hit your call will, well you know.

 

on a side not - I removed the carpeting in the trunk to fix the release for the gas door and found a hole. Looks like a missing panel of sheet metal.... anyone else see this?

 

Where is the missing piece?

 

it's on the passenger side - you can see a square opening and see right out to the bumper cover - so it is behind the carpet - where the trunk light is mounted - I pull out that carpet and see the panel is open - not like a hole that was cut - not rust - just an opening - I want to know if I should seal it or if it belongs there...
