Hi I have an 05 X-Type with 17" wheels however two of them got bent when I hit a pothole the other day. I was looking at wheels and found some S-Type wheels I like they are 17x7.5 and the offset is 60. I know mine are 17x7.5 and an offset of 52. Now when I look up wheels on tire rack they show an offset of 45 for both the X-Type and S-Type so I think they will work just wanted to ask here first.

 

alarsen, the wheels should work. They both have the same bolt pattern and the offset difference is very small. So, buy away and enjoy.

 

Yeah that is what I thought but what puzzles me is that aftermarket wheels show an offset of 45 for bot the S-Type and X-Type. So if offset is so important how can there be so much of a difference between certain wheels that are supposed to fit the car?

 

Ok I just realized that my wheels are 17x7 and an offset of 52. The S-Type wheels are 17.7.5 and an offset of 60. I found a calculator online and it said that there will be 14mm less clearance between the inside of the wheel and the strut housing. I don't know how this is going to effect turning radius? Or if the wheel will even fit at all?

 

The S / X bolt pattern is the same but the width of most S-Type wheels will cause tire rubbing under extreme turning circumstances. I had a set of early 16" x 6.5" S-Type winter tires+wheels and sold them after one season. Too much wheel well grinding every time I parked the car. I can't imagine 17x7" wheels working. You'd likely have to downsize the tire. And even then it would probably still rub.

The problem can be solved with new bolts+spacers, but for the extra money you might as well buy an aftermarket set with proper offset.

And obviously the S-Type R's staggered F/R wheel set would not be good for the AWD system.

The X-Type Stock wheels are 17x7 and I have no problem with them. So I was thinking it shouldn't be a huge deal for the 17x7.5 and every wheel I find for the S-Type is 17x7.5 so I don't think they are staggered, that may only be the S-Type R. The only difference is the wheels will be 14mm closer to the strut housing which is half an inch. I don't know how close the wheels are now but I wouldn't think half an inch should make a huge difference but that is why I am asking here.

 

One of the techs will have to answer im pretty sure X type wheels are independent of S types and XJs...im 99% sure s type and XJs have same fitment but not for X

and youre right s types are not staggered unless its an R.

 

why dont you just have your wheels repaired

 

Well I could do that but I have found some nice wheels for $75/piece and it would cost me about that if not more to have mine repaired, plus my dad tried repairing them himself and forgot to put something under the wheel when banging on them and marred up the wheel face so they would have to be refinished too. Plus I like the design on the S-Type wheels. I have come to the conclusion that if the offset does make a big difference I can get spacers and different bolts to make up the difference but I really don't know that there will be a clearance issue. But what do I know

 

you go find a stype owner and ask to do a quick swap and see. i you lived In houston, Ide say come by and we'de do it real quick, got lots of Stypes

I have the same problem, but in reverse. I have an s type & want to put x type rims on it that have studs on them for winter. My custom 20's won't do snow.

Thoughts anyone?

I've got 18" x 7,5" OEM Proteus alloys, fitted with 225/40/ZR18 Michelins.
And I really want some wider rubber...there is also an 18"x8" Proteus for the S-Type!

Been looking at Arden from Germany, they also have a wheel i might interested in, but it's a little confusing as to the fitment.

P/N AAK 21400 is 18" x 8", same part for both the S-Type & X-Type.
They also state both S-Type & X-Type can use 245/40/ZR18
They don't clearly state an offset for these wheels, but ET46 which means it's a +46 offset as far as I can tell.

I want to go 18"x8" with 245's, either the Ardens or Proteus, no idea if this will work or not...

On the Coventry West site they give offsets for the Proteus;

So now, why the different offset from Arden for the S-Type?

By my calculations, the +60 offset for the 18" Proteus will bring the inner rim closer to the struts (half of 1/2" plus 8mm) on an X-Type so it's likely to rub with 245's...?
