Default 2017 vs. 2018 XF

Since our beautiful maroon 2017 Prestige XF was totalled in a wreck a month ago, we've been looking for a replacement. I'm not impressed with the 2018 XF's at all. First, the Firenze Red is boring - it doesn't have the metallic component at all - just a boring red. Second, the defacto engine seems to be the turbo 4 cyl. A 4 cyl XF? How emasculating! You want a supercharged 6 cyl? Get ready to lay down a LOT of cash. I'm very disappointed with the 2018 XF's and am now considering a beemer or a Lincoln instead. Very disappointing.

No doubt you'll be very impressed by the 4 cylinder BMW models...or you could try the 4 cylinder Mercedes...all manufacturers are moving to smaller but potent engines. The Jaguar engine has close to 300 hp in some applications (the F-Type, for example) - these are not the four cylinders of the past. That said, I would pay the premium for the V6 in the XF.

+1 The wife just bought a 4 pot gas dual turbo BMW. Smooth at idle, quiet, and accelerates well once you get into the mid and higher rpm range. Emphasis on mid and higher. With the new 8+ speed transmissions torque isn't as important as it use to be. No comparison to the SC6 though.

Clearly, my bit of light sarcasm did not come through (sarcasm being the lowest form of humour). My point is not that the BMW or Mercedes or...4 cylinder engines are good- of course they are- that is beside the point. The point is the OP's complaint that Jaguar is installing 4 cylinder engines now in its base models - and that in some way this is "emasculating", with the implication that an Ingenium 4 cylinder Jaguar is below the offerings of a "beemer or a Lincoln" or that Jaguar is out of step with its rivals. Nothing could be further from the truth. But if you want a supercharged V6 or even a V8, Jaguar has them - they just cost more (and this too is industry-standard behaviour).

I too hate the shrinking engines in the new lineup. Grateful for my SC V6 in my 2016 r-sport. I think I might go XE next time, if the options are the same because then I can get the S with everything I want for mid $50's USD, whereas the same engine/trim level in the XF clocks in at around $72K

The auto industry is moving to 4 cylinders for CAFE in the US and generally economy reasons overall. I don't think moving to BMW or Lincoln will make things better. I have had BMWs and MBs and they caused me quite a lot of misery. My 2016 XF Prestige has been excellent really. So, if you are looking for 6 cylinders, look hard at what is out there. BMW now uses 4 cylinders in some 5 series!

I agree. Well stated. I avoided a BMW 5 series with the 4. I see MB has them too. I have V6, not perfect and a bit coarse at some rev points but stronger than the 4s overall imho. But economy rules these days.

I might advise caution re choosing an XE or an XF. Totally different cat! XF is quieter inside with better sound isolation from door seals(3) to windows etc. I drove an XE for a while. Great and better than BMW 3 series but not same as XF.

They can make all the excuses they want for why they don't have the V-6 option, but I wouldn't have bought my XF if the only choice was those 4 cylinder engines. Its just that simple.

Yes. Me too. I don't buy 4 cylinder cars Not yet anyway...
