My 09 XF SC at the dealership
I took it in for a checkup in advance of an upcoming road trip. Only owned it for 1.5 months and the verdict is, needs new diff, teams cooler lines, fuel filter door/lock assembly, tranny pan gasket. Altogether about $10k in repairs. Great way to start the day. I'm hoping the 3rd party warranty chives it.
Wow, that sucks, sorry to hear. How many miles are on the XF? Who is the warranty through? Does it spell out the terms similar to exclusion warranty I posted under my thread "Certifed Jaguar XF"? I believe the differential issue is a TSB (Jaguar Xf - Power train - car safety information, failing parts, recalls, bulletins, complaints I'm not sure exactly thought, other members here have better knowledge than I do. Hopefully that warranty you have covers some of the cost. Not that it helps you much now, but I wouldn't personally ever buy a Jag XF that wasn't under factory warranty for at least 1 year.
My car has 53K miles. The Service advisor spoke to the warranty company 'Repair Advantage' and they are sending out an appraiser. I didn't see any exclusions for the diff so hopefully it'll be fully covered. The fuel filler door is to be replaced as well and am unsure about warranty. I'll keep the forum updated. I'm in a '13 XF V6S loaner and it's pretty nice. I really like the seats and the Infotainment update.
I'm unsure if dealerships still honor TSB's on out of warranty vehicles, if they do that'd be awesome.

Almost a week later and still waiting on Warranty company to make a decision. I'm not sure how they can not pay but we'll see. The sales manager where I bought the car, called to express his displeasure in the car/situation. He said he'd make it right even trading me out of the car if needed. That poses an interesting situation, are the 2010+ models less problematic? The little bit of searching I mainly saw diff issues on the '09's. Is the 5.0 motor much better? I imagine it is. Would you guys trust a replacement diff? Or try to get out of it soon? I was thinking if I could trade out to a 2010 XF or XFR might be the time to do so.
I think the diff issue was only present on the 2009's. They redesigned the diff shortly after. When I bought my 2009 the tech mentioned that it was a known issue. He said they check mine over and it appeared to be in good shape. A leaky diff case is the first sign of an issue.
The 5.0L is a great motor. I prefer my 4.2L supercharged over the NA 5.0L but others are very happy with their NA 5.0L motor. Keep in mind the supercharged models come with most options as standard. If you trade up to a NA 5.0L you may not get as many options. If you are talking about a 5.0L supercharged then I'd go for it assuming the cost to upgrade isn't horrible.

Sounds like a typical extended warranty company...sorry about your troubles. Honestly, I wouldn't buy any XF unless it was under factory warranty for at least a year. You're asking if the 2010s are made better than the 09s, and the simple answer is yes, due to the fact that 09 was the first year for the XF model. You mention getting a 2010 XF (I assume the S/C model) or the 2010 XFR. If you get a 2010 XFR, most likely it's going to be out of factory warranty coverage and then you're in the same boat with extended warranty coverage. Same situation with a 2010 XF S/C. Really what I recommend is getting a 2011 or newer vehicle, esp a 2011. 2011 models have the platinum warranty which cover free oil changes, brake pads/rotors, filters, and even wiper blades during the factory warranty which is 5yrs/50k miles instead of the normal 4yrs/50k miles.
2011 XF S/C should be the same price as a 2010 XFR.
I really wanted an XFR because of the more aggressive design and exclusivity, but I did not want to own a vehicle not covered under factory warranty, and the 2011 XFR was out of my price range by $4-5k. I found a fantastic deal on a 2011 XF S/C with only 500miles on it for $38.5k.
The common issues I've seen on 2009-2011 models are water pump failures, dash board ripples, electronic/software issues and some other minor issues.
Here's something to consider as well... if you can live without the extra HP, maybe get a 2013 XF V6 S/C model...they are in a similar price range as a 2010 XFR or 2011 XF S/C. You'll get more factory warranty and a newer vehicle with the upgraded touchscreen system. Also, if you have Geico for insurance, you'd be able to apply for the mechanical breakdown insurance (they quoted me only $30 per year) and you can continue the warranty up to 7yrs/100k miles with a $250 deductible. Their policy is a lot better than any normal extended warranty as well. This warranty is only available for cars less than 15 months old with less than 15kmiles. My 2011 XF S/C qualified because it was sold as new and was never titled before and only had 500 miles.
Anyways, just some suggestions, hope everything works out for you.

If you can get a 2011, they have a pretty good 5 year or 50,000 mile fatory warranty, the only year for the 5 year warranty.

Thanks for the information. It's funny you should mention a '13 V6 S/C as that's the loaner they gave me. I will say that it is very nice and a good update to my '09, especially the infotainment. But I'm addicted to the V8 S/C so it'd have to be a 5.0 S/C or XFR. I'll also look at the '11's hopefully the price isn't to much higher.
It might be, but I'm not sure how TSB's and Warranties work together. I think if the car was under factory warranty they'd probably fix it but afterwards I'm guessing not.
Tsbs do not expire like warranties. I had the tail lights on my 09 replaced under a tsb recall even though I was out of factory warranty
>TSB's and Warranties
Don't equate TSBs with recalls and stuff covered under warranty. TSBs are fixes for common problems and are intended on saving repair time. The repairs will probably be covered under warranty but afterwards they are simply a repair job. TSBs for safety and emissions repair would probably be covered under a recall.
