Screen stays on -- is this normal?
I had to jump start my car three times in the last five weeks. I took it to the dealer yesterday and they said the battery is okay but they did a software update that corrects a problem with the information/entertainment system not going to sleep.
Today, I did a little experiment.
1. Drive car into garage, and turn off.
2. Close door but NOT lock doors.
3. 30 seconds later, interior lights and screen turn off.
4. Come back a few minutes later WITHOUT key in pocket (as though I went in to retrieve something from the car), open door, then close shortly thereafter, but NOT lock doors.
5. 30 seconds later, interior lights turn off, BUT SCREEN STAYS ON with the screen saver displaying (Jaguar emblem and "Jaguar" script only).
6. 5 minutes later, screen saver still on.
7. 15 minutes later, screen saver still on.
8. 20 minutes later (or thereabouts), screen saver off.
Here's a photo of the screen saver.
Is this normal? Shouldn't the screen just turn off when the car is off? I think this is what's draining my battery.

That's not the screen saver per se.
I checked mine. It switches off in exactly 15 minutes after the door is closed.
What you describe is normal. That center screen illuminates whenever you open and close a front door presumably so as to be "ready". I didn't check whether opening a rear door will illuminate the screen.
I don't think it draws enough to affect the battery.
The battery drain issue was found to be due to a software glitch that kept the ICE system active for too long after the car was switched off.

As I said, they just did the software update that prevents the information/entertainment system (is that called "ICE?") from staying on for too long. Hopefully, thats' the end of my battery drain issue.
I picked up my new '11 XF SC yesterday and I noticed this same behavior last night. Earlier in the day we had a message about a low battery so I wondered if this might have something to do with it.
Now, we were also trying to set the garage door opener (without luck) which I suppose might have also helped with the drain as we had the fan on for a period of time until we finally thought to switch it off.
I've read about a problem in the past with the car staying in "standby" mode if the keys are kept too close to the car (with it unlocked). Is this still a problem? How far do the keys need to be stored from the car when it's not locked?

My 2008 Jaguar main screen staying on for 15-20 minutes after opening a door seemed absurd to me, so I told the mechanic at my local Jaguar dealer I wanted it fixed.
The mechanic informed me this is common and "normal" in late model Jaguars. He even said the salesmen in the showroom were constantly complaining because anytime a prospective customer opened the door to a car in the showroom or lot, that damn screen would come on and not go off for a long time.
Here's are some suggested fixes:
1. Lock the doors. That causes the screen to immediately extinquish.
or if you want to leave the car unlocked...
2. With the key in your pocket, push the start button (keep your foot OFF the brake) all the power in the cockpit (including the screen) will come on. Now, push the start button again. This will immediately shut the command screen down. The interior lights will follow suit about 5 seconds later.
I hope this helps...

I was told by a tech at the dealer that the battery icon on the dash is there to tell you that the car is running on battery power not on the alternator (car is in ACC not actually running). He said it doesn't mean the battery is low. I don't necessarily believe that but so far I haven't had any starting issues. Thoughts?
I also made them update the NAV software when I brought it in for service a while ago. My screen saver turns off immediately when I lock the doors. It will turn on and stay on if I open the door and leave them unlocked. I haven't checked to see how long it stays on though.

A "battery low" message appears on the main center screen if the battery has drained below a certain level. At least it did so when I discoverd I had a bad battery from the factory two days after I first obtained the car.
Yes, the NAV screen will show a a small overlay box containing a "battery low" message if the battery voltage drops below some level when the ignition is in the off mode and only the entertainment and Nav system are on.

I tried to find the thread about the nav screen acting weird about 8 or so pages back but am getting lazy about searching so I thought I'd post a finding on nav screens acting strange here. My screen was coming on grey flashing 2-3 times going off and repeating... Then I thought... what have I done differently in the past few days... Then it came to me... I unplugged my Ipod. Sure enough, I checked the plug and never put the cover back on... it was laying against the bottom of my center counsol... metal connector down... Put the cover back on it and what do you know... screen came up... back-up camera came on... parking aid started!! Hoping it's not a coincidence but it would make sense from a "grounding" issue on sensitive electronics...
For all the squirrels out there, this is NORMAL!!!! The issue with the "drain" is from Infotainment Module not going to "sleep" which causes the drain. The screen shutting off after 20 minutes is not going to drain your battery.
This is what my service advisor told me. I had the software update done that fixes the drain from the infotainment system not going to sleep, and no problems since. The servcie advisor also said that the screen saver uses minimal battery power, so no worries.

It might be wise to unplug the cable at the car end. If one uses the 12 volt converter in the accessory socket does the power to that socket switch off with the ignition? If charging from the USB port does this socket remain live when the ignition is off? Both these sockets deliver power to the device.
