Default Transmission noise 1st and 2nd gear

My trans make a high pitch squeal in 1st and 2nd gear.

How long before I cause big damage?

I did have a trans fault message twice after coming to a quick stop and then accelerating, where the box didn't engage. (nothing happened when I stepped on the gas).

Turned car off, started it and it worked fine.

Haven't had this issue in several weeks.

I just had a 1998 VDP in my shop yesterday for the trans fault and slipping. The first thing I did was to connect WDS and found 4 gearbox faults. The next thing was to check the fluid level and I found it 4 liters low. I put a liter of VW G052162A2 fluid and it was still low. I kept adding fluid until it finally was full at 40 C. I could not find any external leaks and there was no contamination in the coolant so I am at a loss to explain why it was low. I test drove the car and all was normal so I called the customer, they payed, picked it up and drove away.

Check the level FIRST, then condemn the 'A'drum.

There was a member on this forum in the last few months that had 2 other shops tell her that she needed a gearbox (ZF6HP26). I put the car on my lift and saw the pan leaking ATF. I told her that all it probably needed was a a new pan and a fluid change.
I cleared all the codes, replaced pan and fluid with the LifeGaurd6, updated the software to a newer level and the gearbox operated normally. She was glad that it was $400 and not $4000 for a replacement gearbox.

Check the fluid level FIRST!!!

I agree -- you must check the fluid level at the first sign of any strange transmission operation. It really is a ASAP operation to check the fluid.

We only hear about the problem units on the forum -- both of these transmissions are in millions of vehicles and are very good units -- but the fluid must be checked and be the correct type.

The lack of a dipstick is a pain -- but it was done to try to eliminate the uneducated from putting the wrong fluid in it ...... and they still do it!!

Well it finally happened, trans fault, and no 1st gear.

Still drives, but somethings not right.

I guess its big money time to repair.

Will the elm read trans faults?

I suspect 1st is gone.

Did you ever get it sorted out? i have a 2001 xj8 with a ZF 5 speed.

Mine does the same thing high pitch whine, sounds like a bearing spinning in its race or something and only in 1st moving to second at about 2000, 3000 rpm, then when it changes up it goes away..yet step on the gas and let it gear down and it Whines like crazy.

very disturbing, its just a matter of time i guess before this thing breaks down.

I was having the notorius TCM problem, 1000-1300 revs or pulling off from a stop and "clunk" and a jolt forwards (Another sound thats not nice).

What i did was the POS/NEG terminal reset and that solved that issue alltogether.

It shifts now and pulls off smoothly, set aside this Whine ive got going on now.

So i bought a thero reader, warmed up the Trans to the 35-40 c and reached under the car on level ground(i also used a spirit level to check that the car was as level as can be).

opened the fill plug and got about 1/4 of a qrt run out before it slowed to a trickle.

I also noticed that the fluid was quiet clear, Amber in colour, but not what i would guess was 100,000 mile trans oil.

I also noticed that the Green coloured pan gasket was new looking and that the fillhole 8mm hex was slighted warn(from being off before), and that there was a stain on the bottom side of the trans sump around the drain hole.

(so then i start to figure, this has been done before, the fluid is good, the level was good give or take a 1/4 of a quart or so and i may have been leaning back a bit on the level of the car.

So whats left?

definighlty sounds like something spinning and causing friction agains something else, im sure you have all heard a clutch release bearing whine on a standard?.

yet its strange and doesn't make much sense to me, probably because i dont understand Automatic trans.

High impendence on revs causes the whine, yet once your up and moving and the revs drop(changes up) its fine, Now if you floor the beast, the same thing happens, doesn't appear to be slipping, but the whine comes back.

Im lost and its late and im tired. Its going to be expensive to put this right im sure.

Yet though out all this, the only code ive been thown is the p1000 and p1111 learning codes since i did the reset?

o yes and the CAN code p1642.

My guess and a very negative one is that its going to be the Drum and possibly LJD2401AC the up graded TCM module, thing is, its $2000 at jag.

Ive found a Indie that can reprogram the one i have, yet i dont think that will solve the Whine, maybe i should pay the dealer the 125 to get a second opp.

Good night, hope some one has some one has some answers for me.
