pologuy, my understanding from what I have read is that there will be an all electric option. There will still be a gasoline (and/or diesel?) variant too. There has been no full out releases yet. Jaguar did release a picture of the rear of the car which has more of an XF style tail light to it with a light bar running from side to side. If I had to take a guess, I think it is going to look very similar to the Land Rover Velar concept car. You will just have to put a Jaguar grill on it and the light bar at the bottom edge of the trunk lid. Here is a picture of the Land Rover Velar concept car (do not confuse with what the Velar actually came out as, search for "velar concept").
To keep the Greenies at bay, the new model will be announced as electric, but then it will become available with fueled engines, but not sure if diesel will be part of that, it may be a hybrid with petrol (gasoline). It will be expensive, and is not expected to be a big seller. It just keeps Jaguar in the up-market saloon market until the SUV mania has run its course. Once a maker exits a market its very hard to get back in.

All of the other manufacturers seem to be producing electric only models as quickly as they can so what makes you think Jaguar will take a backward step? None of the press articles I have seen or interviews with those in the know indicate anything other than an electric only XJ.
u102768, not saying that they won't go all electric, but there is a large majority of people out there that are not willing to go that route at the moment (as you can see from here). Could I see a hybrid or some gasoline powered with an electric boost, sure. But going all electric I think is going to shun away too many people. Besides, you have too many people trying to enter the market. Fill the gap. Make what people are wanting.

I agree. Unless it has a good range, in all climates, then no way would I touch it. There was an article about the I-Pace being driven in Dubai. Running with the airconditioning on full blast decreased the range from 250 miles to 155 miles. 155 miles is only 248 kilometers. On the weekends here, I regularly make a 260 kilometer round trip when I go to Al Ain and back. Driving at the 160kph speedlimit on highway E22, I use less than a half tank of fuel roundtrip. If the range of an electric XJ is the same as that of an I-Pace when running the airconditioner the entire way, I wouldn't have enough range to make it back home. Even if they had charging stations everywhere(which they don't) it takes longer to charge an electric car than to fill it with fuel. Heck, my first job after I retired from the Army back in 2003, was 85 miles to and from work(170 miles roundtrip) everyday. Any vehicle with less than a 350 kilometer range would require me to have a second vehicle. Anything less than a 450 kilometer range would have me always concerned. If I can't use the vehicle all the time, then it isn't something I would be willing to pay the price Jaguar will be asking.
I am not convinced it is a good idea either although with my 4.6 mile commute to work I am the ideal customer. The XJ doesn't sell in great numbers now and I think it will be even worse if it is a pure EV.
The plug-in hybrid seems to be the best option, especially as the range gets better. My wife bought a BMW 330e in April and is still on her 3rd tank of fuel because she mainly uses it in electric mode. The 2 litre turbo charged engine gives her peace of mind and the ability to do long trips if she needs to. It isn't a slouch either with a 0-60 of 6 seconds!
This seems to be the consensus on virtually everything I have read - and from the statements made directly from Jaguar - all electric and nothing else for the 2020+ XJ...

I suspect the sales of the I-Pace will decide. if good, the XJ will be all-electric, if bad, there will be fuelled options
