Default 2004 XJ8 will not start

Working backwards:
1)This morning when turning the ignition switch all the dashboard lights flash and the headlights flash along with a clicking noise but the engine won't turn over.
2) Yesterday the warning message panel went through an entire series of random warnings of numerous falts when I started the car. I had to turn the car off and restart the car and no messages were there the second time.
3) Five days ago when I started my car I saw a transmission fault message. The car popped into reverse, I backed out, popped into drive. Turned off engine and after restarting it popped into drive. Could not get out of first gear no matter what I tried so I drove at 32miles per hour at 2000 rpm for an errand. Drove back home, parked, 40 minutes later restarted car and everything was perfect with transmission. 4) one more item, many times lately when I first start the car, I get a buzzing noise from the speedometer and the needle shakes and vibrates at the below 10 mph indicator.

I've moved your post fromthe XK8/XKR section to the XJ (X350/X358) section where you will get a better response for your MY.

I am having a problem starting my low mileage (40K) 04/ XK8. Originally , when trying to start, nothing, not even clicking from starter solenoid. First thing I did was check battery with a Load Battery tester. Battery checks out OK. Not surprised because I keep it on an intelligent battery maintainer when car is not being used. I keep the car locked down also when not in use, however made the mistake of opening the trunk and setting off the horn alarm. Since then the
switch will accept the key, but key will not rotate past 'O' position.
Did I inadvertenly set off a ' lockdown procedure' of some sort ?
If so...how do I neutralize it. No information in the manual about any lockdown situation.
Is this just a simple problem to resolve ....or ?

Xanadufl, sounds like your battery is kaput, these symptons and all the warning lights are typical when a battery is completely flat, how old is the battery, I have had two replacement batteries in the last 7 years on my X350.

+2 on battery... if you have the original Jaguar battery there is a date code stamped on the negative battery terminal:

Ex: 08 - 04 (8th week of 2004)

Default Thank you all!!!

What astonishes me is how completely disingenuous Palm Beach Motor Cars, my local Jaguar dealership is! Putting it more succinctly, they are
F#%*ing lying thieves!

After describing all these symptoms to them, I was told it had to be diagnosed for $160.00 as they had no idea what could be the cause.

Initially. I had eliminated the thought that it could have been the battery given the brightness of both the flashing dashboard lights and the headlights.

I then called my trusty independent repair shop, Rapid Auto Repair, run by Brent Dell, and his assistant Ravi, first thing yesterday morning who immediately told me it sounded like the battery was toast. (This concurred with your reply!)

On another issue about 10 months ago, Palm Beach Motor Cars gave me the same BS answer that my car had to be diagnosed for $160 when I called stating that my windows would no longer close automatically with a momentary pull of the button. I called my trusty local repair shop, Rapid Auto Repair, run by Brent Dell, and his assistant Ravi, who immediately told me how to simply reset the auto close feature with a sequence of button presses.

The battery has been replaced and all is working fine!

Thank you so very much for the reply

WOW! The Jaguar dealership wanted to charge you $160 to reset the auto close feature?? Unbelievable. I got charged $150 last week jjust so they could read some suspension codes. Not only that but the guy who answered the phone pronounced it "Jag-wire". I will never go to a dealer ever ever ever ever again.
