All kinds of problems!
Please help. It started with "restricted performance", but if I would turn the car off and turn back on again it would be ok, the mechanic replaced a temperature sensor because he said that is what the code indicated. Then my "low engine coolant" light will come on but the coolant is ok. The battery started dying overnight. And now the transmission is slipping in first gear, the code we are getting for the transmission is a Traction switch failure? Are all these related? Could it be something electrical? Computer? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Carlos,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!
In order to be as helpful as possible, we will need to know the year and model of your car and the exact codes that have been scanned so far.
It's a good idea to add your car's year, model and engine information to your signature line. Hover your cursor over your username in the upper right corner of this page. In the dropdown menu click on the first option, User CP. In your Control Panel, click on Edit Signature on the left edge of the page under Settings & Options. Add your car details and then click Save Signature.
Also, since we're a friendly group, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum and post an introduction so we can give you a proper welcome and learn something about you and your Jaguar.
Cheers,
Don

This cars are really subject to problems if the battery is going bad because of all the electrical connections, modules, and computers. You've got to get that problem fixed before you'll have any success doing anything else.
Yes I am a a new member so I will get my info posted. The car I am having problems with is a 2005 XJ8L with 130,000 miles on it. I appreciate everyones help on this. thanks

Hi Carlos,
As others have mentioned, Jaguars are known for exhibiting weird electrical gremlins when the battery's health declines or it is not being properly charged due to problems in the charging system. If your car still has its original battery (it may be marked Jaguar/Varta), it's probably time for a new battery as a matter of course, but it would be worth having the health of the charging system checked, at least by a chain auto parts store where they'll do a basic check for free.
If there's any question about the health of the charging system, a good first step might be to clean the connections in the battery power and charging circuits (alternator, starter, engine ground strap, battery terminals and ground screws to the body, etc.). Even minor corrosion on those connections creates cumulative resistance that can impact proper recharging of the battery and overall performance of the car's electrical systems. A similar related issue is corrosion on the connections at the many ground points in the system. The most vulnerable connections are the ones in the engine bay and trunk.
Another possibility is water on the electrical connector for the Engine Control Module (ECM), or water ingress inside the ECM case. The ECM is mounted behind the glove box and its electrical connector protrudes through the firewall. Its electricall connector is under the cabin air filter under the plastic cover at the right-hand base of the windshield. Leaves, seeds and other debris collect in that space and can clog the drain and hold water around the ECM electrical connector.
Regarding your transmission slipping, that could be related to electronics, or it could mean that it's time to change the transmission fluid and filter/pan. There are mountains of information already posted on these subjects in the forum - just use the Search function at the top of this page. Note that many of the S-Type cars use the same ZF 6HP26 transmission as your X350. Deal with the electrical/electronic issues first, and if the transmission is still misbehaving, I would do a fluid and pan/filter change (note carefully all the warnings about trying to save money by using an incorrect fluid with the wrong viscosity index and/or friction modifiers which will only lead to more trouble and cost).
I would still be interested in knowing the exact trouble codes that were triggered in your car if you have a record of them.
Cheers,
Don

Thanks for the comments everyone. I have now replaced the battery. But the problem I still have is with the transmission. It jerks when put into drive or reverse. The only code coming up is Traction Control Failure. Again your help would be appreciated since I don't want the mechanic doing trial and error! It get expensive!

Hi Carlos,
What type of diagnostic system is your mechanic using to scan for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)? Is it possible he's missing some clues that Jaguar SDD might reveal?
Have you searched this forum for reports from other members who have had transmission issues on the X350? Sometimes google works better to find threads in the J-F forums.
