Hi all,
Haven't been that active on this board but I'm looking for some advice or comments.
I was in a fender bender where another guy backed into my passenger rear door. See pic below. The body shop (Jaguar in Plano) ordered a used door since apparently Jaguar has stopped manufacturing new replacement doors ! (It's possible to send the damaged door to Jaguar UK and have it refurbished but it may take 6+ months to get it back - I don't want to drive the rental Chevy Cruze for that long...)
The only one they found was for a long wheelbase car and they are thinking they have to give up and say the car is unrepairable :-( Apparently they can't find another door since they only have access to Texas parts providers (or other parts providers they have already done business with)... They are still looking though.
Any ideas on how to approach the body shop to prevent my car from being totaled??? Are there any out of state parts suppliers that might have any doors?
I would hate to have it totalled. It's going to be a challenge to get enough money out of the insurance company (the other guy's) to buy a new one - last I checked there were 4 2007 XJ8 (with nav) in the US for sale and all a lot higher than KBB/Edmunds estimates for my car.
Give that a whirl, it is how I found the only XJR in a scrapyard in NC.
Can you have the doors shipped in from out of state? Even if you got doors from a different color car and had them painted.
I would also try and talk to the insurance adjuster and try to get him to consider the rarity of the car as an extra deciding factor in his appraisal. You never know.
+1 on car-parts.com. I did a search for a right rear door and found a number of them available. Prices run from around $350 to $600 for MY 2004 - 2008. Here is what I found for 2007 MY only.

Thanks all of you that suggested car-part.com - seems to have a lot of doors available. I passed it on to the body shop guy I've been in contact with. Let's hope for the best.
Didn't realize the XJ8 was so rare :-) When I bought mine several years ago, there were plenty for sale in the DFW area.
The other option is to take to car to a restorer or have your body shop remove the door and take it to a hot rod builder to repair
It does not appear to have any structural issues and im guessing your body shop does not feel comfortable working with alloys
My suggestion is to take the car to be accessed by someone that works with alloy
Even if you source a new door the rear arch needs to be repaired and from the sounds of what your body shop is saying my guess is they will just fill it with bog. As the body is alloy you wont know without checking it before paint and looking behind the panel

I'm pretty sure the Jaguar dealership body shop has done aluminum work before :-) I actually took it to another shop first and after looking it over they said they couldn't work on it since they were not certified by Jaguar to work on XJs so they wouldn't be able to buy any parts if they needed it...
Dealers are not the right place for body work they usually farm it out and quickest way to repair that would be new door if its insurance
I buy quite a few cars from the auctions over here in Aussie that are damaged and that is nothing even if its aluminium as long as the rails are not bent its a relativity easy fix
Take it to paint-less dent removal first then a aluminium specialist panel beater Audi A8's are are aluminium as well ring round a few shops get on the net or just let them scrap it and move on if you like the car its worth redoing
If I saw that car at the auctions over her I would buy it in a flash the parts for X350 are scarce as hens teeth over here
I bought parts from a guy in Melbourne that scrapped the first one over here he sold every single item on the car within 3 months even sold the shell to another dealer
The US is probably the same just a bit slower in part sales but with so many X350s being over there and the prices being what they are parts probably fly out the door over there as well
Number 1, get your car away from this dealership and into a body shop that is interested and capable of doing the job.
How ridiculous that any dope with a computer can find doors for your car. From what I can see in your photos your doors are repairable. Mind you that replacing the doors is perhaps cheaper than doing the repair on the originals but either way you should not be looking at a "total".
This is outrageous! They don't want your business. They just want easy jobs with a high margin. Run. Don't walk and don't do any type of business with them. I would report them to somebody at Jag to boot. Did you post the name of this "dealer"?
But looking at the damage I'd say this job has "gravy lick" written all over it. Paint and hang a used door, and a bit of body work in related area. Big enough job to make some money, but easy enough for fast turnaround.
In theory, that is.
But.....
Not to cast aspersions on the OP but why do I have the feeling that part of the story is missing? Or misunderstood? A repair shop and/or insurance company that refuses to buy parts from another state? Really?
Run. Don't walk and don't do any type of business with them. I would report them to somebody at Jag to boot.
Oh, the drama! The humanity ! The horror!
I know that dealer-bashing is all the rage here (any every other car forum)....often justified..... but maybe, just maybe, there's a reasonable (or at least alternate) explanation that isn't coming out. The old saying 'there are sides to every story' has merit.
Did you post the name of this "dealer"?
Post their name? Heck, let's skip all that and get right to setting the place on fire and keel-hauling the body shop manager !
I've used the local Chevy dealer for body and paint work on all my Jags. Outstanding work....including excellent repairs on my old 99.97 point Series III Championship class concours car. I have another Series III going to the same shop in a couple weeks.
Experiences vary, of course, but personally I've never seen any evidence whatsoever that suggests, much less proves, that summarily avoiding dealership body shops altogether, and going right to an independent, will ensure good results.
they usually farm it out and quickest way to repair that would be new door if its insurance
And that's a bad thing? If insurance was willing to buy a new door I'd have no objections, personally.
Cheers

All the dealerships and Insurance Agents around here refer or farm out their body work to the local (Eustis) Ford dealer. This Ford dealer has a renowned body shop manager who takes charge and responsibility.
By the way, for those of you who felt my last post was over the top, consider that this situation is exactly how wonderful examples of automotive art prematurely end up in the wrecking yards.
